ParticipantYeah, my wife is tired of living in an apartment. She loves to have friends and family over and now it is just not convenient.
Initially we planned to buy in early 2007 and then changed it to Fall 2008. But now I think I might have convinced her to wait until Fall of 2009 by showing her how much we have “saved” by not buying earlier this year.
Yeah, I was not able to save a lot before but since we got married in the summer we are saving like $3-4K a month now.

ParticipantGood thing for me is that my mother-in-law is in her early 50’s and she will baby sit our kids. She is a licensed baby sitter. We will buy a house near hers. She will not charge us any money but we probably take care of her annual vacation to Vietnam which costs about $5000.

ParticipantThanks everyone for your good advice. I probably won’t need the 2000+ sq ft homes. We Americans need to learn to consume less anyway. Like you said, I or my wife could be laidoff if the economy goes sour. If we buy a house at $400K or slightly less in the next two years then even if one of us losing our job it won’t be catastrophic.

ParticipantI have a question on owning foreign mutual funds. Let say I own a mutual fund with 100% Japanese stocks and the fund remains unchanged for the day however the yen appreciate 5% agaist the dollars. Does it mean that I made 5% on that day?
Thanks,
