ParticipantSure there were problems with labor costs but in the mid-late ’80’s Toyota Celica had a ‘betty’ to announce if your door was a-jar. No American car had this. The wow factor coupled with a affordable price point garnered consumerism attention and money.
Market forces prevail and the cool factor of the hip, airplane cockpit gauges took hold. Detroit countered with the Pinto and Gremlin. or K car even. C-mon. The Japanese skunked us. We did not learn and they took, and continue, to take huge market share.
Simply put, with or without unions, Detroit had viable competition that is winning by delivering a better product.
Relax the enviro constrictions on manufacturing and relax the constraints of energy production and Motor City will return as we will always need lots of new cars/trucks.

ParticipantYou guys are all over this issue. In the correct sense. Where is the Black and Hispanic leadership trying to raise the bar in their communities. Need leaders to promote family, education, values, morals, etc. Without this, nothing changes.

Participant
.. how about profiling based on other parts of “looks” such as beauty, weight, height, fashion, etc…?
been on Match.com lately? 😉 guess that is the good kind of profiling 🙂

ParticipantWhile I’m really not a fan of JNap in her prior employ she may actually help the UC system.
Follow the money. The job of any university pres is to bring in money. She has fed friends to be tapped for grants. Next, we have some very large lib run business in California that my kick in more $ to her.
My largest concern is policy changes to allow more foreign students to be admitted and offered generous fin aid rather than Calif natives and other US citizens.
It is what it is.

Participant..and the protests and various riots? How many didn’t agree with the OJ verdict and did not riot?
This is not in search for truth, but for politics using race as the catalyst.
It is easy for journalists to cover this crap vs. actually working to cover world events, our economy, fact checking politicians.
At least we don’t have wall to wall coverage of Bob Filner, .. yet.

ParticipantYou are a king if you wife lets you smoke everything!! She will still want to roast stuff when she sees the pink meat from the smoker.
That said. You are the man! You will love the smoker. Can’t miss. I’ve had natural gas, charcoal, wood and my suggestion is charcoal or the side box wood ( larger footprint ). The simple, cheap, 2 pan water smoker ($40) will work is as Rich says, can’t miss. Really. Slow and low is the trick. Add soaked wood chips or blocks of hickory, apple, maple, etc. and you will be living large!
Don’t need the window. Electric will work but use the larger blocks of hickory in between the element to create the smoke.
The one thing is that smoked meat looks like it is not done. ie… the meat is pink. If you put a thermometer in it, it will cook at 170-200 which is perfect.
Really can’t overcook with a water smoker. When you want to get fancy, go with the side box burner to create smoke.. they call it cold smoking. This how you do cheese. Either way, you really can miss.
Try a whole turkey. Full pan of charcoal, 12-14lb turkey about 4-6 hours and you are golden. Remember to add a little water and extra charcoal after a few hours. Other than that, you don’t need much seasonings or marinade as the smoker does it for you.
Give us a full report. You will become addicted. It really is fun and very easy. Oh, and spray the grades with cooking oil to make cleanup easier.

Participant
snip …a public telephone years ago, I mentioned some flagged words and I’ll be damned if “they” didn’t set up a fake address and covertly bring me in
Got to be more to this. What is the back story? And the second time?? Dang, is trouble following you?

ParticipantAlso check property ownership by foreigners. Years ago, I am rusty, you could buy a 99yr lease but the kicker is that is was ‘revokable’ at any time. So that lead to bribes to local government officials to keep your house.

Participant“insight-per-word ratio”
This is brilliant! If you don’t mind, I’m going to use this ( frequently ) with my teenage daughter.
Followed by the, Less is More concept.

January 27, 2013 at 12:39 PM in reply to: The Phil Mickelson Effect and California: Taxed to the MAX!!! #758591Hobie
ParticipantThx Sk. I find it interesting that some cities ( San Marino) go after service trades like landscapers,or anyone with a name on a work truck for business license fee but let the big $ get a pass.
Maybe when Mickelson say 63% taxes he is lumping in other ‘fees’ as well.
I do this with fees, permits, tax. Gives me a better estimate of the true cost of business. You know, ‘for the privilege of doing business ..’
End snark as I’m writing out tax checks now and not happy.
