ParticipantWhy don’t we just legalize the Constitution? The Constitution states that only gold and silver shall be legal tender. We’d be wise to listen to the advice of those that came before us when it comes to fiat currency, bimetallism, central economic planning, etc. Gold IS real money- has been for some 5000+ years. Chart the price of many items vs. gold and the price of those items relative to gold will remain flat. Not the same for paper money.
Paper money works until it gets inflated (over produced)…and it ALWAYS eventually gets inflated by those in charge of its production. Those who produce the money do this to more easily square up their debts. It’s much easier to debase with paper and ledger entries on a computer.
Inflation is a hidden tax that nobody wants to talk about. Those that get the money first (Wall St., big corporations, etc.) benefit while the rest of us have to produce/earn more to keep up. If nothing else, we should allow for competing currencies. If the dollar is so strong then it should be fine.

ParticipantI hear you jp. Something about the simplicity of Taos and Earth Ships is attractive to me.
I’d rather be free and beholden to Mother Nature and suffer her ravages than to be a slave and more comfortable and held hostage by my fellow man, who is also beholden to Mother Nature.

ParticipantI wish I could do something like that. I don’t think I was hard-wired for it in my younger days before marriage and children. I did pack up my car and move cross-country, but that’s different. UCG and others give some sage advice. I guess you could always take a crash course in whatever high-tech field to help get caught up on the time spent away. I say go for it. Like someone told me before I moved out here; it might not work out, but you’ll always regret it if you don’t give it a shot. Best of luck to you either way.

ParticipantThe beige carpet gets dirty easily, especially with two young children. I have to clean (spot treat, vacuum, steam clean, and dry) it about once a month or it looks embarrassing. This is not a fun or quick process and it seems the carpet gets dirtier and dirtier with time.
Ripping up the carpets and installing wood floors would be a pain, but it is almost worth it considering how often I have to clean the carpets. Besides, I also have a good friend who is very handy and is willing to help me install the flooring for free.
I don’t bug the owners about small stuff. We’ve made a number of minor improvements over the years to the landscaping with plants, grass, installing sprinklers, painting the exterior, etc. and I only charge them for parts.
When we first moved in SDGE said they wouldn’t light the pilot to the original heating unit because they said it was a fire hazard. The original water heater sprung a leak and needed to be replaced and there was a hot water line leak that they had to bipass.
