ParticipantRegarding the legs we had the same concern about the plastic legs and checked it out with both Ikea and several contractors. The rated strength for the legs is ~250lbs. per leg. So your typical cabinet will support ~1000lbs. I doubt it will be an issue.
For further reference check out http://www.ikeafans.com. Trust me I was very hesitant based on my experiences with other Ikea furniture etc. but the kitchen’s really surprised me. And they are 40% the cost of other equivalent kitchen cabinets.

ParticipantIkea has some great kitchens. Contrary to a lot of things they sell, their kitchens are VERY good quality. I think they were ranked 3rd in Consumer Reports only behind two very high end brands.
My girlfriend and I made an offer on a house and it will need a new kitchen right away. We went and looked at what Ikea had and I was impressed.
Best part is their kitchens are significantly cheaper than a lot of the crap made by Kraftmaid.
With that said, people are always surprised on what simple remodels actually cost. Shop around for contractors there are a lot of people out there looking for work and a lot of them have excellent references.
On the appliance side (if she is doing that) have her go to the Sears outlet store off of Morena. They have a lot of good stuff there at very good prices (50% off or more).
Can’t help you for granite but I do know there isn’t a lot of demand nowadays so you should be able to negotiate some good pricing.

ParticipantThe days of appliances built to last are far gone. It’s called planned obsolescence. My mom has a full kitchen of foo-foo appliances by Dacor and she has had nothing but problems. The only one that really works with no problem is her Sharp microwave.
Regardless of that I have never heard bad things about Kenmore from Sears. Alternatively, depending on budget I have also heard good things about Wolf. Although expensive they are built for operating in a commercial kitchen. I have heard BAD BAD things about Viking though, another commercial grade appliance company.
