Check out the Torrey Pines Gulls club. Your 5 year old should get a kick out of watching a RC sailplane contest. They fly in several different locations like Poway or Torrey Pines (on the cliffs).
Be careful, it can cost you a fortune if he gets into this. More likely that dad will get hooked though!
