Participant
My wife works for the government. Theoretically positions are opened for everyone. However, 99% of positions are filled with relatives and friends. They post the positions online but usually just for show.

you do not need to “know someone” to get in.

I guess this solidifies my position on unions. Basically fraud under the guise of “protecting the middle class” Like the middle class are ONLY government union workers. Ok it may end up that way, Wealthy, Government workers and the rest of us in poverty, which seems to be the big plan…
Now if we can just get long jail sentences for crimes such as stepping on the cracks in the sidewalk…
Stepping on the cracks in the sidewalk not a crime? It only takes the assembly passing a bill…

Participant
Our county used to have union bus drivers.
A little surly, been there, done that mindset,
but they knew the job and it was a union gig so
they wanted to ride it out for 40 years.
I am generally against union excess, but there is a LOT to be said for loyalty on BOTH sides of the fence.
I write software so if I want a raise I generally have to go find a new job, where I can market my new skill at a premium. My previous employer then hires (and trains) a new developer for the job for about what I got on my new one. Makes more sense they would agree to a decent raise, but not the way it works. OK in this economy if you have a decent job you shut up and are happy…

Participant

Every time I post about public unions a host of you jump on the “killing the middle class” bandwagon, but it is clear the San Diego Pension Managers apart from violating State and Federal law by failing to fund their pensions when benefits were increased have gambled away the bulk of the money on bad investments.
Pension managers don’t fund the pensions. Employers do.
Pension managers DO “manage” pensions. At least here in San Diego, the pension is not funded – promised, but NOT funded sufficiently. This seems like the act of a debtor charging away debt and hoping to “somehow” come up with the money later.
