ParticipantNPR/KPBS radio had a story about the school this morning.
http://www.kpbs.org/news/2014/jan/21/poway-unified-kids-cant-attend-new-school-because-/
It didn’t talk much about the school itself, but rather how some Poway USD residents are excluded because they are not paying Mello Roos used for the construction of School39.
Funny thing is, I live in on of the CFDs that is funding it, and I’ve talked to a lot of the parents in my kids’ preschool classes, and so far NONE are saying that they are planning to send their children there. The parents in 4S are really happy with Monterey Ridge and Stone Ranch elementaries. I wonder if it’s one of those things that is more attractive when it’s just out of reach…
Hey, where’s earlyretirement, anyway? It seems like he would usually be weighing in on this topic.

ParticipantWell, the closest Trader Joe’s (Carmel Mtn) is pretty close already…but yes, that would be convenient.
Of course, the closest Target (Poway) is also relatively close already… I went there this morning. 🙂

ParticipantI heard that rumor back in 2011, when I was looking in Del Sur. This year, I heard it again from a friend who lives there. My friend also said that In-N-Out will be in there somewhere.
I’m not thrilled about the traffic either (I live in 4S sort of near Del Norte HS), but I do love Target… 🙂

ParticipantI’ve been a physician here in California for 11 years. I’ve seen a few cases but not many. The most memorable was a ~20 year old Type I diabetic woman (from Delano, I think) who had it in her brain/spinal fluid. I wonder if she is still alive. I also found out that there are zero Infectious Disease doctors in many of the counties in the Valley. (That was the reason that the woman was transferred to LA for her medical care rather than remaining at her local hospital).
The Midwest has histoplasmosis, but you hardly ever hear about that, either.

ParticipantSo random… about a year ago, I googled a colleague of mine and accidentally found that he had won the Ronald McDonald house several years back (before we worked together). I’ve never quite figured out how to ask him about it… “so, I was googling you the other day…” Ummm, no.

ParticipantThis 40% discussion reminds me of a discussion that I had during college.
I was interested in signing up to be in the bone marrow registry.
My friend said that he would never sign up, because if he were a match, he wouldn’t want to donate. His reasoning was that it simply would not be worth his time to do so, even if he were potentially saving the life of another person. He would have no problem to donating to someone he knew, but if it were an unknown person, forget it.This conversation REALLY bothered me as I had known him for several years and never would have guessed… It really changed my view of him forever.

ParticipantMy niece went to Magnolia and just finished last year. She is now a freshman at Patrick Henry. I myself went to Lewis, but that was a million years ago, when it was a “junior high” school.
Magnolia has a few oddities, such as having electives in Turkish language. You need to watch out or you will get put into that class, which does not exactly seem useful.
She had some really good teachers, and some really bad ones. I think the really bad math teacher may be gone now. My niece seemed to do well with the small size of the school.
She had a lot of friends attend either Lewis or Magnolia, and all seemed satisfied with their choice. My niece went from being a B/C student in 6th grade to now straight A’s in 8th and 9th. I think most of that is a change in her attitude and effort though (“Oh, this matters!”) rather than a direct result of the school.

It does seem that the school pyramid for that development is also quite appealing.. Del sur/Oak Valley/Del Norte…
If you like Oak Valley/Del Norte, then definitely check out Ivy Gate as well. It feeds into Stone Ranch/Oak Valley/Del Norte and it is very nice. Unfortunately, I don’t think there are currently any listings there, but perhaps by the time you are looking, there may be.

ParticipantHello there,
We are very happy in Talavera 4S Ranch, but we are a bit below your budget (more like $900K-$1M).
At your price point, you could consider the Ivy Gate community (feed into Stone Ranch Elementary), or as others have mentioned places like Santaluz, the Santa Fe Valley (Crosby etc). There are other small communities just north of Camino del Norte (near Maranatha School, etc), but I would have some concerns about changes in traffic patterns once some of the newer shopping centers, etc reach completion. I believe that all of the areas mentioned above are gated.
From the Crosby and Santa Fe Valley, etc, you will be able to cut up to Del Dios Hwy and enter I-15 already north of Lake Hodges in Escondido. If you are in Santa Luz or 4S, you will not have gate access to some of those roads, and you will more likely enter at Camino del Norte or Bernardo Center or Rancho Bernardo Rd. However, from what I can tell, there is fairly light traffic on I-15 north in the mornings. I don’t think you would need to use a FastPass. Contrary to what another poster said, I believe that both north- and south-bound lanes are open on most mornings (barring a MAJOR event — I’ve only seen that once in 1.5 years living around here).
If you do choose somewhere farther south (Carmel Valley corridor, Del Mar, etc), you can be assured that I-56 east bound has VERY light traffic in the mornings.

ParticipantI also kinda doubt that he is going to put anything really juicy/scandalous on Facebook. Hopefully he will not be ‘fessing to drugs, drinking/driving, sex, lying, cheating, crimes etc for everyone to see. You’ll be lucky if you get to see a pic of him at a party or something. Then again, I don’t have very many teen/early 20s FB friends, so who knows.

just took at look at the PUSD map. Of course these guys would think they live in Scripps Ranch. the condos on north side of Scripps Poway all go to Scripps Ranch schools. And since they empty onto Scripps Poway, shopping would be done in Scripps as well. These folks would probably be really p*ssed if Sabre Springs decide to come over and place “community markers” proclaiming Sabre Springs on Scripps Poway Rd.
If you drive on eastbound on Poway Rd, there are big Sabre Springs corner “neighborhood signs” (the type placed by a developer) at the streets turning into the communities on both the north and south side of Poway Rd. So in a sense, they are already “marked”, at least from that direction.

Sabre Springs, I’m not sure. I think that is too far south to be part of RB. It is really located off of Poway Rd, or between Poway Rd and Scripps Poway Parkway. I don’t think it is part of the City of Poway, however, but rather another part of the City of San Diego. If so, Scripps Ranch IS the closest other City of SD neighborhood.
Sabre Springs is north of Poway Road, not south.
Actually, it is both north AND south of Poway Rd. http://www.zipmap.net/California/San_Diego_County/Z_Sabre_Springs.htm

Participant
Sorry, you’re right, Sabre Springs is not Scripps Ranch, it is Rancho Bernardo, just like Carmel Mountain is Rancho Bernardo, just like 4S Ranch is Rancho Bernardo, just like Del Mar Mesa/Pacific Highland Ranch/Palacio Del Mar/etc is Carmel Valley, or Fairbanks Ranch is Rancho Santa Fe. I can go on and list many other examples but I’m sure you get my point.
Hmmm, 4S Ranch is very near Rancho Bernardo, but it is not part of it, because Rancho Bernardo is part of the City of San Diego, and 4S Ranch is not. 4S Ranch has a County sheriff’s substation and a county branch library. The Rancho Bernardo library is a city branch library.

ParticipantDon’t get me wrong; it seems like a very nice area.
I just think marketing the whole area and naming the streets after Bing Crosby songs makes it sound a bit… geriatric. Sort of like a RSF version of Lawrence Welk Village. My grandparents loved Lawrence Welk and Bing Crosby, but then again my grandfather is 99 years old.
It does make SOME sense if indeed Bing Crosby used to own the land. Neat about your grandfather golfing with him…
