Participant“……they buy a house that costs $500k in TODAY’s market.”
Please excuse the question, but why such a nice house? TG just bought a place that was under 300k if I remember right and it sounds pretty awsome. I dont think that guy has bad taste, so I wonder why you need such an expensive house. An intergenerational loan like you describe is alot easier on the parents if it is 250k (+your 50k saved from screwing the bank) than if it is 500k.
The other question you need to ask is how long your dad wants to keep working. If he wants to drop dead on the job, and is making 100k, then it isnt such a big deal. If he wants a long retirment, then that is a different story.
Stop looking at this from your point of view and look at it from theirs. If it is the best thing for them, regardless of your interests, and it helps you too, then great. If not, then find a new scheam.
BTW, my parents have done something similar with my brother (he was buying his first house), and it has worked out for everyone. It can be a good idea.

I would suggest you go take a look at the budget: you cannot tax cut your way out of it.
FYI: (-1) + (-1) does not equal zero. [/quote]
I keep hearing this but I have yet to hear a really good reason we cant cut our way out of it. Usually it just seems like some kinda montra that gets repeated so everyone will believe it. Mixed in with some overstated sarcasim of “or we could just fire everybody” a real debate never seems to happen.
We could cut our way out of it, the question is are we willing to accept the reduced services it would bring.

It isnt that they dont matter, it is that they are lazy slobs who only drive down housing values, live off the Gov doll, pollute more, are generally ugly and smell funny, cant hold a real job, are uneducated, most likey addicted to drugs, and are in general a drag upon society that is responsible for EVERYTHING that is wrong with society.

ParticipantI think this belongs right up there with ‘Hope for Homeowners’. Another giant boondooggel that will not do what it is intended to do, will hurt us in the long run, gives hope that is both misplaced and temporary, and will be very expensive. All it does do effectivly is give the elected leadership cover and really nice sound bites for the talking heads to coo over. Oh and good catch Coop, seems like they cant decided if it is $75B or $200B.
Id like someone to ask Obama how many future homeowners this will hurt. ‘Sure, this could help up to 9 million current homeowners (using GOV math), but how many future homeowners will now have to pay more for the same thing, lowering the future quality of life for our children?’
Let him gag on that one.
