Why would you want to find the few Charbucks hidden around town? Crap coffee, annoying servers, not to mention being a characterless chain that drives real coffeehouses out of business.
@spdrun Only reason to visit the Starbucks is to catch a whiff of home…I brew my own tea at home, but when we were jonesing for a bit of SD, the kid and I went into the SBUX took a few deep breaths and felt better… ;~)doublewideParticipantjs-
So I should have been picking *your* brain before moving out here! π
As to taxes – just one thing to add, no sales tax on CLOTHES! OMG, almost did a happy dance when I found that out; actually I may have done one!
Well, welcome home…I gotta say I’m loving the lack of wild fires and earthquakes after a lifetime in San Diego. Granted there are springtime tornado warnings, but at least we know when to duck and cover. :>) Will say the first time I heard a test siren go off on the first Wednesday of the month I was looking for mushroom clouds.
Tell your wife if she needs a fellow So Cal girl to commiserate with after a month here I can tell her how to find the few Starbucks hidden around town and gently introduce her to Caribou Coffee. ;~)
Safe journey!
doublewideParticipantIt’s like deja vu all over again…We just did the same move last December…Encinitas to Edina (a bit west of where you’re settling, in the ‘burbs).
We’re coming up on our 1-yr anniversary here….It’s a love/hate thing.
55 mph on most freeways is killing me, but the roads are waaaaay less congested and there are a million ways to get to anyone place, but watch the on/off ramp exchanges – they must have been built when cars were small and only 10% of the population drove.
No hands-free law here so everyone yaps on their cell phone up to their ear, at first it was bizarre to see and now it’s just annoying b/c no one uses a damn blinker as they are all driving one-handed!
There is no El Pollo Loco, Rubio’s or Champagne Bakery…Very sad. ;( But there are Big Bowl restaurants – custom stir-fry…So good!
We went through a tough adjustment b/c we arrived in December and promptly got our first snow and had to find our way around in “weather” and had to break it to our California dogs this was how we roll now…Oh, and we had to take a fricken test to get our MN driver’s licenses! 24 years driving in Cali and I had to re-take my written test AND study for it! Note: Get your new DL before you change to MN auto insurance – it’ll save you a headache as the ins company will want it to underwrite you. Oh, and they outsource their DMV stuff, but it’s still the same take a number game…only much shorter lines.
Since you’ll be joining us in winter – keep quarters and gloves in your car! First below zero day you’ll get a warning to fill your tires w/air. Your local dealership will gladly help you out, but trust me, you won’t be near one when the air in your tires compresses and your TMS light goes off… π
We have one more year here till our kid has her degree and at first we thought we wanted to go back to SD – the major draw being my husbands family and having a support system, but we’ve made friends here, found a great doctor and and excellent vet…I think we may actually head further east rather than go back west when we’re done here…
But, in full disclosure, the kid and the hubby are heading back to SD in a week for their first visit since we moved – one fish taco and the kid may decide to apply to UCSD. ;~)
Let me know if you ever need the lowdown on life here…It was tough going it alone, just the three of us, but 10 months in I feel like I’ve climbed Everest.
Oh, and Byerly’s is your friend…You won’t find a Vons, Albertson’s, Ralph’s after you leave CA. Cub and Rainbow are ok, but Byerly’s and Whole Foods make life good.
Welcome to MN…It’s an adventure…Bring patience and warm clothes.
Oh, and wiki “Minnesota Nice”…
doublewideParticipant@jstoesz – We’re looking forward to seasons!
When you get to MN post here – we’ll have a Midwest Pigg-Meet at a Caribou! :>)
The move was voluntary – kind of…Hubby got laid off in August and w/ in two weeks had two offers – NY or MN. We chose MN b/c of cost of living and quality of life factors. If not for the layoff he wouldn’t have looked for a position but once it happened we looked only outside of San Diego….It was time to go….Guess the layoff was the kick in the pants we needed.
I will say hello to the lakes for you….Even frozen over they’re pretty cool to a California girl….Can’t wait for spring when I can rent a canoe.
doublewideParticipant@paramount – Nope, not from MN. Husband born and raised in San Diego and I lived there 29 years, kid was born there, etc.
Yeah, lots of folks swimming in Temecula…Since I’m not SCUBA certified, glad we got out or we would have drowned. The place we sold in ’06 is now worth 50% less, if you believe Zillow. We would have been in a world of hurt.
@no_such_reality – I guess the question was how the system works. The article wasn’t clear. Is there no disclosure by the selling agent/sellers that this amount is due? The one family that had paid road expenses previously and was now looking at paying again after downsizing, even after checking with the city and finding road work wasn’t scheduled until 2017, seems to have gotten the shaft…Yup, got a fridge and all the extras in the rental…Paying 1800.00 for 3000 sf including the finished basement…Don’t know if you could find that anywhere south of Temecula in So. Cal. Temecula’s commute to husband’s job + gas prices would have made the trade-off brutal.
Luckily those summer hours don’t seem too far off from San Diego’s…I blame DST…They’ve got it all reversed. We should be on DST now, give people more time to drive home in the daylight. DST during spring and summer just makes for 9:30 fireworks on 4th of July. It’s a conspiracy between Bed Bath and Beyond (black out drape sales) and Starbucks (coffee sales for people who have to wake up in the dark to peddle off to work)!
Speaking of Starbucks – we’ve seen ONE the whole time we’ve been here. Bizarre! Have yet to check out a Caribou Coffee.
Thanks for the hunting dates…Will remember to plan my outings around them since the city will be empty! ;>)
We got the Loon license plate for our car! It fits us. ;~)
Will be avoiding Lake Minnetonka! Thanks for the heads up…
No buying…We’re working on reclaiming our homeowner virginity…We’ve taken a vow of mortgage celibacy. Kid is in college, we’d like to move to Europe someday…Renting = flexibility for us, plus I think buying in Minnesota may be above our pay grade considering things like paying for road maintenance, wells, septic systems…
Yes, tornados…We have been warned about that…What are your thoughts on these NOAA radios I’ve been told about? Are they worth it? Do they work? I almost peed myself when Edina tested its emergency siren a week after we arrived…All I could think was we were getting nuked! No one around us at the market seemed phased so I checked in with hubby, who checked in with boss…apparently they do a test every month…I gather those sirens in conjunction with NOAA radios are the way to find out about heading to your basement stocked with water, flashlights, batteries and Spam? All I know is…at least you get a warning with tornados…No warning system for earthquakes and do not get me started on wild fire evacuations in San Diego…Trapped on Pomerado Road with hundreds of neighbors and no information as to where the fire was only to find all the hotels full….slept in cars with our dogs in Pacific Beach!
Lovin’ this mild winter! It’s been so nice finding our way around w/out four feet of snow everywhere! Everyone has told us the horror stories of last winter…Ugh! We would have died!

Just spoke w/ the realtor (who might read this site – oops, busted). He said the short is on the second, the first is to be paid off. He did confirm that no showings will be done until after Feb. 14th (the start of the last 30 of our lease). He said there was a “situation” with the tenents (me :>)) and that we’re nice but stressed – YA THINK????? When I asked about not getting to see the place till Feb. he said they have two offers on the place already, sight unseen, and that they will be submitting in mid-Nov for a short sale closing in mid-March. So looks like Feb. 14th I’d better be prepared for those who made offers on the place to want to see it – oh joy!
FormerSanDiegan/werewolf….we would have been happy to help them if they’d been in the least bit willing to help us, and all this “tough talk” is meant to be funny…If I don’t laugh, I’ll cry at this point!
tg….that was hilarious!
Effective Demand…we will learn from your example as renting is again in our future…buying is not a good fit as we’re activly trying to get out of SD and have a daughter who will be in college in 3 years so don’t really need “roots”.

doublewideParticipantSo the consenus is, crime scene tape and chalk outlines by the front door would be overkill? Maybe some of those faux bullet hole stickers you see on cars – pop a couple in the front windows :>)
My nephew did say he’d bring over a few friends and tp the place to give it that “lived in” look.
Don’t know if the place has a NOD…I looked at SDlookup and it’s not there…Is there another site to check? My guess is they’ll stop paying their mortgage, if they didn’t already skip their November payment…How long till it shows up as a NOD after missing payments? We’re stuck here till March so it’ll be interesting to see how it all unfolds..
I can’t decide if these folks got some really bad advice from a pushy real estate agent or if they’re really this selfish..Must be a combo of both.
@ nocommonsense…FWIW we would have been happy to work with them and made the place shine for buyers had they been flexible and let us go at the end of December (only missing out on 2.5 mos. of rent) but their whole “cake and eat it too” attitude was messed up….
@ Alan in Fallbrook – that’s too bad about Fallbrook High…but thanks for the head’s up..
I have to admit to calling the listing agent on this property..As a side note though – he was hard to track down for a non-realtor person..No contact info on Zillow, only a company name(some brokerage based out of LA) on SDLookup, but did finally find a name and local # on Trulia. I’ve had my MIL on the case too, but neither of us has gotten through, it’s just his voice mail everytime. Basically we were each going to pose as an interested buyer and try to ferret out their plans for showing the place. We feel like we’re living on the edge now, knowing they’ve listed the place, waiting for the shoe to drop and get a call that they want to show the place…We’re paying rent to live in stress!!!
That biker gang meth lab is starting to sound like an option!!! Anyone got some Sudafed? ;~}
