ParticipantHi Marion,
I just realized I never answered your question. We close on June 19th.
We probably wont move in until August, though. We plan to demo all the flooring and replace with handscraped maple on 1st flr, recarpet upstairs, repaint entire place, change light fixtures, etc.
The place has been vacant for at least a year and needs a LOT of work, so it will be a long summer….

ParticipantWow…after having seen a few foreclosures and REOs with my realtor, this doesnt look bad at all! I dont see any holes in the walls, paint looks OK. and the light fixture is still in the DR area. Looks like it needs a new banister and some clean up. Unless I’m missing something. My guess is they knocked out the banister as they were carrying things down the stairs.
I still dont understand why people get so ANGRY when they’re foreclosed on and feel a need to trash a home. I mean, it’s not the bank’s fault.
The last awful REO I saw had EVERY fixture – including the thermostat control – ripped out of the walls, holes in the walls, rotting food on the kitchen counter and filthy clothes and detritus that the previous occupants obviously couldnt take with them strewn all over the place.

ParticipantYep…we also had Home Economics AND Economics at my high school. Econ was kind of dry and more about economic theory, labor unions, Great Depression, etc.
I took Home Ec because my friends did and immediately regretted it. I never learned to sew, and that was half the class. However, I talked my neighbor into finishing my sewing projects in exchange for babysitting services.
Students at my high school could learn how to sew, bake a cake, fix an engine, woodworking, but not a thing about what happens to people who spend more $$ than they earn, dont pay their bills on time, or how to save money for a future.
I have a friend who worked for a collection agency when she was in her early 20s. She believes this is something that every kid should have to do. She came from a crazy family, parents had no clue about money, were always in debt, etc, but working at the CA has made her a fiscally responsible adult.
