Participant
If I ever move to SD, I’d buy a house in an older non-posh non-HOA area so I can have a good, old-fashioned clothes line. Perfect climate for air drying clothes, and it’s a lot more efficient than a power dryer.
We do 90% of clothes-drying outside, and we live in Carmel Valley. As long as you don’t dry your clothes in the front yard, our experience is that they pretty much leave you alone.

Participant
You could cancel the next couple of lessons and pay her for them anyway, like a severance. In these situations, a question I tend to ask is, “Does this money mean more to this person in their life than it means to me in my life?” The answer is a factor in coming to a decision I feel good about.
This is what I have done in the past. Worked well.

Participant
Things don’t move in straight lines forever. I give the market no more than 12 months then we will probably move into recession. I’m not sure of your timing.
I agree with this. Decided it was time to drop to 50% stocks (all index funds) when the Dow hit 20K. We are too close to retirement and need a good bit of our $ to be accessible, not locked up in a bear market waiting for a turnaround.

ParticipantCreepy for sure.

Participant
There’s a difference between trying to time the market by staying in cash for a long extended period time to buy and sell at the time you think its optimal and to not participate in the market for a few days while you wait for an event to occur that can potentially crater the market. Once the event happened, then you’d buy back in at whatever price it is. That’s not timing the market. That’s just remove risk from your portfolio for a short period of time.
I disagree. Missing even just a few very good days in the market (which no one can accurately predict when they will be) can cause your returns to be significantly lower than buy-and-hold. http://www.marketwatch.com/story/how-missing-out-on-25-days-in-the-stock-market-over-45-years-costs-you-dearly-2016-01-25

Participant
cvmom, were you able to connect laptop using the Tmobile coverage outside of the US?
Yes, we have tethered via the Tmobile connection many times while outside the US. And you just can’t beat the cost. We pay $90 (plus taxes) for 3 phones with 2GB 4G data per phone per month, unlimited everything else including 3G. And the 4G data outside the US, when available, does not count against the 2GB per month limitation.

ParticipantI have Tmobile, and although the coverage here is not superb, I have been amazed by the free coverage outside the US at no cost. Texting and 3g (sometimes 4g) internet service is free. Calls are reasonable, my memory is 20 center per minute. I used to pay through the nose for Verizon coverage outside the US and it is wonderful to have free coverage practically everywhere, like 180 countries or something.

ParticipantI love my Nexus 6p and would probably be looking at a Pixel if it wasn’t for the price.

ParticipantI’ve never heard anyone talk like that. Too sheltered? Female? In any case, when I saw the video I was truly amazed and shocked. How can I be shocked when this should be expected? But I was.
Will others also be shocked? I would really really hope so. Wonder what bg thinks? And others like her?

Participant

Unfortunately, I think this is wishful thinking. I took an Uber ride yesterday with a Muslim immigrant driver (naturalized US citizen) from Iraq. I was so sure he would be voting Hillary…but no. He didn’t like either major party option, so is planning not to vote at all. If even a Muslim immigrant is planning to stay home on election day, it seems to me that there is a real chance of a President Trump.
Fortunately, we have better tools at our disposal than your one person survey. National and state by state surveys confirm that Clinton is comfortably in the lead.
Unfortunately, I think some of the Trump voters are too embarrassed to tell the truth to pollsters. I remember during the primary season it seemed quite often that the Trump vote was significantly higher than predicted.

Participant
It is Donald Trump. He didn’t pick a woman because he doesn’t think of women as equals. He might understand TV, but he doesn’t understand politics. And he’s sharply underestimated how bad this campaign could be for his franchise. He could be bankrupt and broke in 5 years.
Participant
That’s my fear. Very likely the national poll showing dominating lead by Hiliary is undercounting Trump supporters by a wide margin.
Exactly my thought. That is what happened in the primaries–people are embarrassed to tell pollsters that they are leaning to voting Trump. Causes polls to underestimate Trump support.

ParticipantWe have a Leaf, bought new several years ago. We’ve been (and hope to continue to be) very happy with it. Extremely low maintenance. Range can be an issue for the older models.
