CoronitaParticipantHomemade mask doesn’t do shit for aerosal. If you just wear a homemade mask, you can still smell just about everything that passes through. N95 is better but only if you wear it correctly, and there is a tight seal between it and your face. Most people don’t put on a mask correctly, so the effectiveness goes way down. The only masks that are really effective are the P100 masks. But those masks, besides the need to put them on correctly, have a valve. So while it offers superior protection for yourself, doesn’t do shit for the person next to you because the way the valve works, it closes fully when you breath in but opens fully when you breathe out. It’s designed to protect the wearer and make it comfortable to breathe, but that’s bad news for everyone else because water droplets/etc from you is going right into the air unfiltered. I wear these respirators all the time for painting and I feel much safer that St least with paint, you aren’t wearing things correctly you can tell right away…because you can smell the fumes right away. So I had plenty of time to practice wearing a respirator correctly. I guarantee most people,.even if they have the proper PPE, probably aren’t puting it on correctly to be effective. that’s why social distancing and remaining at home remains key.
That’s why a lot of these protestors are fucking stupid. They keep saying we will keep at 6 feet away as if 6 feet is a magic number for guaranteeing you won’t catch something from a stranger next to you. That 6 feet has a lot of assumptions. for example you aren’t stand next to someone for a very long time, there isn’t any wind that could carry aerosol particles for a distance, etc. Morons, absolute morons. Darwin in practice.
I am curious what’s their race/ethnicity. Last I checked, it’s quite an exclusive club.
bay area some cop and fire dept have a rotation program. except these days it’s more like a transfer program. But here, friends live in East County.
CoronitaParticipantA couple cop friends recently switched to fire fighting.
Better pay, less occupational risk, don’t have to deal with all this crap.
Don’t worry, the more capable good cops are voluntarily leaving if they are too young to rest and vest for their pensions. What we are going to be left with are a bunch of less than ideal ones that can’t find better things to do. This isn’t any surprise. Whenever any organization downsizes, top talent usually leaves first because they are the ones that are in demand elsewhere. Bottom talent and rest and vesters is what you are left with.
CoronitaParticipantYeah, I would be surprised if we don’t have a reinfection. No one gives a shit anymore. Not at restaurants, not outdoors, not at protests.
This lockdown thing was the stupidest thing. Americans have proven they are incapable of doing the simplest basic things if it can increase the chances of reducing infection. Trump and anti-mask people don’t take it seriously. Protestors don’t take the social distancing and mask seriously, and our businesses want to reopen quickly too. Everyone is bending the rules and making this own shit up to try give themselves an excuse why they shouldn’t be doing the basic things in the spirit of what our health officials are saying.
Just open everything up and let darwin survival of the fittest and evolution run its course. Send all the healthcare workers home so they can rest.
CoronitaParticipantSo I just got back from a run around Miramar Lake and stopped by ShareTea in Mira Mesa. Oh my god, the line was all around the building. So I left and went to MeetFresh and same thing. I looked around lines everywhere for food and drinks at several Asian eatery.
At least from what I see in MM, I think many of these food places will probably recover ok
CoronitaParticipant

Jeez LOL,
Next time I think about doing something I will be sure to consult “he who is holy than thou” LOL.
No gambling.

No cruises.I just saved u a ton of $
Phew! Cars aren’t on that list.
C8 Stingray is an absolute must for happiness at Thunder Hill.
(Thunder Hill is a great track)
CoronitaParticipantI really didn’t want my kid to go to Canyon Crest Academy. Nice school, nice stafd, nice counselor that we already talked to a few times. But I’ve heard it can be pretty intense. It’s a great school for kids that are already really focused on what they think they want to do, but my kid is still a kid so none of this is applicable.
There’s a computer science track that is almost 2 years of college CS. There’s an art track that is almost 2 years of a college art major. A normal high year’s worth of math is condensed into 1 semester, so by the end of sophomore year you could have taken Calc BC AP or Statistics AP. or finished with 3 years worth of language requirements in 1 1/2 year . that’s just nuts.
I really didn’t want my kid to do this. I was doing the opposite of a tiger parent and saying , how about taking less classes so you get more free time to do things outside of school. Id rather my kid take their time to enjoy life. Are you sure you want to go to a school that has a 5 x 5 semester schedule? Instead, how about going to Torrey Pines or Westview?…”no”…. How about going to LJ Country Day or Bishop School or The Cambridge School. “ewe, I would need to wear a uniform. no” . Why CCA and an unnecessary load of stress? “because all my friends are going”…
And the schedule my kid picked out? Already “doubling up” on everything , despite me strongly suggesting taking it easy.
1st semester: Math 1H,Biology
English 1H, Art 1 , French 12nd semester: Math 2H, Art 2
, French 2 ,PE (“because I have to”) ,World History 1Jasus Christ, are you serious? Already questioning why out of all languages my kid would pick French. Picking Chinese it would be a walk in the park. Picking Spanish, it would actually be useful here in CA. But French? English, Chinese, French- totally weird combo. And why taking two years worth of math in 1 year?
“because all my friends are doing this too, some are starting with math 2H and 3H”This is not going to be fun. I tried convincing taking an easier life approach. Take more electives, photography, digital arts, etc. Oh well. At least we’re just disagreeing on school choices , not drugs, alcohol, friends, relationships…yet….
CoronitaParticipant

I dont think uci has a premed program.
lol. May be the parents meant UCR. UCR has a cool premed program that, if a student qualified, would fast-track a student straight into its medical school
I thought that was Davis and a 6 year program. maybe I forget. it’s been awhile
CoronitaParticipant
Race one of your cars.
Funny you should mention that. I can’t wait for my kid when they get a license.
CoronitaParticipant
”Please don’t get a crazy idea to short Tesla”
Too late for me 🙁
I think it will be a very profitable short in the end and I am very liquid and patient. But so far… :-(
I’m sorry. Hopefully, you consider some protective call options. Sometimes you win sometimes you lose.
CoronitaParticipant
Wasn’t there a discussion a while back about getting exceptional grades at a low rated high school vs average grades at a top ranked high school or is that info too old to be relevant for now?
Things are just gonna get even more confusing with the SAT waiver.
See here’s the problem. My kid does the typical asian kid things. My kid plays the violin. My kid does orchestra. My kid does art. Just like every other asian kid.
Need to do something that different. Maybe sew 1000 face masks for covid?
CoronitaParticipant
I think a good strategy is cultivate some good letters of recommendation. Or play some obscure sport like fencing!
How about curling? Hey we won gold at the last winter games!!!!
CoronitaParticipantSorry, I don’t get it. What do you mean by “holistic”?
Are you saying that for UCI, you get extra considerations for example if you from a challenging environment?
CoronitaParticipanthere lies the problem.. Before if your kid went to a 4 year college and was directionless, yes it wasted the parents money, but it was recoverable.
Now if a kid is directionless after a 4 year college, he/she probably wasted the equivalent of a starter home. So if there is any shred of doubt, maybe the JC route for some kids is a better option until they get their act together.
Before, in college, there was some leeway to allow the kid to be uncertain and try different things..These days, it’s to cost prohibitive to do this unless you are just filthy rich.
Sadly, a lot of career.decision making is being pushed down to the high school level. My kid is going to Canyon crest Academy, and they already have specialized tracks starting in 9th grade. I’m not sure if that’s necessarily a good thing unless your kid is one of the exceptions and really liked something early on.
