CoronitaParticipantFunny part is that for my own taxes, I didn’t have any penalty to pay.
For my kid’s taxes I had to pay a $56/$24 federal and state penalty.
I forgot that she had a lot of dividend income from some Valero stock bought a long time ago when it was in the $20ies. So I got dinged by not paying any taxes on the dividend. I guess it’s ok since it’s on an auto-reinvest in shares plan. I wonder how much longer the dividends are going to last at this rate. Lol.
My kid is a lot luckier than me. It seems like my kid’s investments are doing a heck of a lot better, lol
CoronitaParticipantand like every other time after a strong initial opening, now mid-day, the markets have given back a good portion of the earlier gains, with nasdaq turning negative. I sold some things shortly after opening bell. Getting use to this sort of pattern
CoronitaParticipantI forgot who said this here awhile ago, but they said when the markets are volatile , take smaller bites more frequently.
That’s what I’m trying to do in my trading account. I’ve been in and out of things like with really small hands. Each hand might not be that much, and I’d things come crashing down, the downside is mitigated. But doing this 20-30 times, builds a decent return. And trading commissions are now $0. So there are times if I get spooked, I’ll sell something with even when it’s just like $1 total gain. lol.
CoronitaParticipant
Wow, we’re all doing well! Beating the indexes!
Can’t sneeze at that.
I’m really thankful that at least for now financially I have been mostly unaffected by the covid induced downturn despite my company initially being the first one affected by all the closures. We’ve had to scramble to reinvent ourselves very quickly and even so, it’s no walk in the park. We aren’t out of the woods yet so we will see. Knock on wood. The need to do contact tracing for many companies has helped us pay the bills …. for now…
And the only reason why my portfolio looks good is because in my trading account, I regularly move in and out of positions, which while normally underperforms indexes in the past,.in the current volatile environment has worked out well. How long it lasts, who knows, but I did a few weeks ago swear I was going to sit out the rest of the year….only to reenter a small position when the Dow fell back to 25k…..Now that it’s 27k again, if the 500pt futures rise hold up in the regularly trading session, I’m going be moving back into more cash.
Damn Robinhood day traders that drove Tesla to $1790/share….lol
Anyway, folks doing well, count your blessings and give thanks …and try to help those around you that light not be so lucky… You never know what tomorrow brings…
CoronitaParticipantI think so far things have been going well for investments. My ,401k/IRA is on autopilot. It’s doing 2% so far. My kids 529k is roughly 1.5%
My trading account is do very well. I’ll owe a very large short term cap gain taxes next year.
CoronitaParticipantDr. OCR, if you don’t mind sharing if you know…how’s the ICU capacity looking in SD thus far?
CoronitaParticipantThe irony to this is that even when the malls opened not many people were shopping. I was over at UTC shortly after it opened and while there were people walking around, not many people were going inside stores to buy anything even with the deep discounts. The exception was the apple store, but that was about it.
CoronitaParticipant
CoronitaParticipantFinally got my taxes done.
They were more than last year, but also I earned a lot more than last year. Fortunately, they were much more generous with underpayment penalties this year, I had no federal underpayment penalties.
I think my withholdings were reasonable in line. I ended up owing $2000 federal+state for myself and $2000 federal+state for my kid, mainly from dividend income from kid’s custodial trust account.
2020 will be interesting.
CoronitaParticipantyeah, before wiring money to an escrow account, make sure you call the escrow company and triple confirm the wiring instructions. When I was doing a 1031 exchange, the escrow companies were very very careful about it.
CoronitaParticipant
I went to LoanCabin and filled out the inquiry paperwork. 2 days later I get an email asking me for some rough details, to which I responded yesterday. Still no response.
Strangely I’ve pinged HLS twice and he’s not responded either. Maybe I’m un-loan-worthy, sniff…
Josh
Im pretty sure it’s just because they are busy with an overwhelming demand to refinance. Did you end up getting a forbearance or did you end up skipping it?. I read somewhere that they changed the rules so that people in forbearance could refinance, so I was curious if there were real examples of this happening.
CoronitaParticipantYeah, I have to admit, skyranch is pretty nice.
I have a cop friend that lives there’s and the few times we get together, it’s a nice fun drive there from where I live.
CoronitaParticipantOcrenter, unrelated I hope all is going well for you, glad to see you back. Hope you are staying safe and healthy.
CoronitaParticipantI am going to wait for a below 2% 30 year at no cost no fee. I have a feeling it’s coming.
Ideally we will see a slight housing correction along with a continued decline of mortgage rates. I’m not holding my breath but one can dream.
