CoronitaParticipant(end rant)
…anyway Kev, sorry for the ultimate threadjack….
Again, my advice… Check on the valley first…
CoronitaParticipant..Part of the dumbest parts of CARB is the visual inspection…That’s the part that everyone complains about…
Because like I said, entirely possible to pass the sniff test (even if you don’t cheat) or pass the ECU test (even if you don’t cheat)…But if some emisisons component doesn’t have a CARB sticker on it…Not legal technically, unless the smog station overlooks it….
Same two catalytic converter from the same manufacturer that performs the same. One is the Federal version that is legal in 49 states, except CA. One is the CA CARB version… The difference? A nice CARB # stamped on the CARB version about about a $300+ price difference…
Of even better. Suppose you are doing an engine swap…
If you car is a CA car, you can’t swap any engine/components from a non-CA car… If on the other hand, you had an out of state car, and brought into to CA and registered it, you can do whatever the heck you want, as long as you pass the sniff test… (assuming pre-2002)……
And since there isn’t any difference in emissions components for cars sold in CA versus the same type of car sold in any of the other 49 states…Can you say bureaucracy?
CoronitaParticipant
Maybe. But it will get harder as time goes by. Or maybe you have the technical expertise.
My bet is that eventually you won’t need to do smog anymore as the info will be sent wirelessly.
Yes, and that is exactly my point.
The vast majority of the people will not have the technical expertise to handle dealing with misbehaving ECU’s. And fixing random ECU problems (that might not even be emissions related) but that could cause you to fail will be an incredibly expensive repair bill for your average consumer who has no technical knowledge.
And of course, those who actually know what their doing, this actually makes things even easier.. Because theoretically, if one has the ability to flash whatever the heck he/she wants onto an ECU, one can theoretically make the ECU read whatever is needed…
So what does this really solve? Not much….
CoronitaParticipant
Flu. I own a service station in CA.
You cannot reset the ECU to pass smog. The whole drive cycle needs to run for your car to pass smog. The newer cars now sent the VIN when you plug in.
The new rules were negotiated with auto manufacturers who want their customers to have a good consumer experience (easy smog).
The benefit is that new cars are perfectly clean, expect for the CO2 of course. Compare to the polluting old cars of past.
Funny, because my ECU and OBD connector allows me to do just that. How do you think all the tuners flash their custom ROMs onto the ECU? 🙂 Not that I would suggest anyone do it… But at least as a theoretical exercise, it’s been done…

I second the Bay Area if your single and have no ties.
Unless he works for an institution that provides good benefits and employment security.
I have young relative who works for a major university in the midwest as a techie. He’s not money hungry to seek out the go-go environment of Silicon Valley. In the mean time, he enjoys the relaxed work hours, biking to campus, and plenty of vacation time.
employment “security” is a myth.. And it’s definitely a “myth” for someone just joining a company…except maybe if you work for the government.
The days of good benefits are over, and besides obamacare takes care of everything, so a company’s health plan is not really a selling point these days :)… Especially, if you’re young, single, and healthy, unlazy and motivated…
Heck, Texas is better than Georgia, because Texas actually does have a mini-silicon valley on some of the burbs..
So, like a I said, go for the Silicon Valley tech companies that offers the stock and stock options, pay your dues, and reap the benefits……Because at the end of the day, the color of money all looks the same anyway, and let’s face it…One wouldn’t be “considering to relocate to georgia for a better career” if money wasn’t one of the many motivating factors…People don’t work for free and take on more responsibility for free…unless one got RIFed and is desperately looking for income…
CoronitaParticipant

The one thing I absolutely can’t stand about CA…
The idiotic, bureaucratic CARB rules….
California was the leader in clean air. In fact, the EPA eventually adopted California rules, as have other states who implemented smog programs.
The rules are made for everybody. If you don’t like them, put your car on non-op and make it a track car.
I’m sure people remember the polluted air back in in the 80s and before. Smog alerts all the time. LA was almost like Beijing. The air cleared up in the 90s.
It is entirely possible to pass a sniff test but still fail carb because of stupid rules.
But what is going to be even more fun is watching a lot of you going in for the post MY2002 cars smog checks…..
Basically, those tests will require only an OBDII link, and if your ECU ends up throwing any CEL’s (even if it isn’t directly related to emissions), you might end up failing the smog test anyway even without a sniff check.. It’s not a problem for folks with OBDII scanners that can simply reset whatever fault codes or folks that have a custom flashed ECU that can do whatever to the ECU…. But it will be very very interesting to see what it does to the average person who doesn’t have that ability……

Uh, no….
VW also made diesels that were smog-exempt if that floats your boat…
Can’t mod oil burners
CoronitaParticipantI’d take silicon valley over georgia anyday…If you still care that much about your career and you are a techie and you are single, that’s the direction I’d personally go…Planning ahead. Companies always look great on paper for the first few months or even a year…The question is, what are you going to do IF it doesn’t work out and you want to move out… In the Valley, if you can’t stand X, you walk your resume over to Y, and you can probably get a better position/comp package for doing so….Even if you haven’t stayed put for more than a year, it generally isn’t frowned upon, because everyone does it too.
Much less here in SD…And even more so in Georgia….
If you’re gonna go through the trouble of relocating, I’d try up north first..I’d even stretch to say that if you’re single and a techie and don’t have property here in SD, the choice between Silicon Valley and SD is also a no brainer…
CoronitaParticipant
Get a pre-1997 diesel. Problem solved, no smog test required. And Mercedes made some damn nice cars in the early 90s that would last forever :)
Uh, no….
CoronitaParticipantThe one thing I absolutely can’t stand about CA…
The idiotic, bureaucratic CARB rules….
CoronitaParticipant. deleted….
Trying to live to my latest motto…
FLU 1:39 “Thou shall not try to be a dick”….
Carry on!
CoronitaParticipant
BG, I believe that some people who don’t have a social conscience think that in order to become rich, you have to be selfish.
…Then again, of course there are those that *think* they have a strong social conscience..,,and even try to *talk* like they have a strong social conscience….but then again, if you scratch just a little below the surface, it’s really easy to tell that they are really just fake and selective (arrogant at best, hypocritical at worst)….
Really socially conscience people, for instance, don’t spend most of their time trying to convince other people how much more they should be doing…They spend more time actually doing….
Really socially conscience people, also, for instance, aren’t as judgemental on say…”fat” people…
Really socially conscience people, also, for instance, aren’t so judgemental on say… people who have religious principles, since obviously not *every* religious person is a nut job….
And finally, really socially conscience people don’t tend to gravitate towards psuedo-sexist/misogynist viewpoints…
I find it funny that some of the folks that claim to be the most open-minded people and spend most of their time trying to convince people how open-minded they are and how others should be exactly as open-minded as they are….. are the same ones that tend to be the most judgmental and hypocritical..Afterall, most people who really are so, don’t spend so much time telling others how awesomely open minded they themselves are….
…Just saying….Carry on!
CoronitaParticipant

….”every one of us should help out poor people…everyone but me…”
Kinda like Warren Buffet…
errr.. Warren Buffet donated the majority of his networth to charity.
Buffet is doing a lot more good making money while other people do the helping using his money.
Err. I thought I deleted that part about buffett. But I only deleted 1/2 of it…
I originally posted something about Buffett,
“Rich people should pay more taxes…Everyone but me…”—Warren Buffett because it was related to his hypocrisy wrto to Burger King….Never mind… Carry on… It’s entertaining…
CoronitaParticipant….People who say one thing, and do the other……
….People who think what others *should* be doing, while personally living a less than stellar example of what they think people *should* be doing…. -
