It never ceases to amaze me that these days, more Americans are interested in seeing other people fail then they are interested in seeing people succeed… Talk about the total Schadenfreude mentality that if I can’t have it better, then neither can you…
Envy-fluenza strikes again..
Wrong: I wish Elon Musk with Tesla, Lockheed with their fusion reactor project, and Sunpower with their high efficiency solar panels all of the luck in the world. Same to anyone building hydro power projects where they make sense and producers of modern fission reactor tech.
I just happen to think that the frack industry, as has existed for the last 5-10 years is an insanely asinine idea. And that oil as energy should have been left in the last century.
You mean like Solyndra?
I thought though for someone that champions lightweight automobiles and routinely rails against bloated newer cars would be up in arms with a 4600+ lb tesla model S
CoronitaParticipantSpeaking of black friday/cyber monday.. I just bought a brand new….
Dustbuster… I hate my older dustbusters. The battery just craps out after a few months of use and never holds a full charge afterwards… This one has a lithium ion battery.. heh heh…
CoronitaParticipant
Hopefully, this is just the beginning. We need oil stocks to do down another 50% and massive layoffs in the frack industry in the US. Better the Saudis poison their own environment than we do.
Meanwhile, we should be working on mandating alternate energy technologies, so when Saudi oil does run out (and kick that third-rate country back to the Stone Age), we’ll be set without needing to poison ourselves.
CoronitaParticipantI heard they had some pretty good deals on guns.
It remains to be seen if energy and Dow chemicals shares was a black Friday deal last Friday.
CoronitaParticipantI don’t know flyer.
Aside from tech and entertainment (which even in those industries most people are not making a *killing* , yet still doing pretty well), I think by nature of being on the west coast, it’s an entry point to the far east. So with that, a lot of people come to the more populated urban areas and end up bringing a lot of opportunity. We’re talking people with money to spend and able to consume at various level. That has to be a net positive for our state’s economy, for local businesses, retail, and the real estate industry… Also, a lot of these more well to do people want to immigrate here (legally) and park their money/assets here in the U.S. because they themselves have more trust in our legal/financial system than what happens overseas..And they’ll be the ones paying federal/state/local taxes when they do.
I don’t think things are as bad as people make them out to be.. Expensive.. Absolutely… But it does come with a lot of perks too. It’s probably also why for folks that want to sustain themselves here, they need to figure out how to tap into that stream of new money, directly or indirectly, whether it’s as a business owner/retail owner/ independent contractor, or as an employee of a firm that taps into that stream…It wouldn’t hurt if we all did, frankly.
I’d say relative to the rest of the bigger cities, san diego is actually lagging in terms of opportunties relative to everywhere else right now. We didn’t get hit as bad, but we certainly aren’t rocking like Silicon Valley is right now or L.A.
CoronitaParticipant
The Movie/entertainment Biz seems to be doing very well as well.
Heck whatever they got going on in L.A. seems to be doing very well, There are new Tesla’s Maserati’s and assorted German luxury and sports cars everywhere and traffic is just packed at rush hour.
That’s just because the credit spigot has been relaxed again and people can lease again.
CoronitaParticipant
Seems like I’ve seen quite a few “all the taxpayers are leaving Cali!” threads over the years on this site.
On a tangential note, my oldest graduates in May from a California university and has already received TWO job offers in state – six months before graduation!
The economy must be doing pretty good out here at the moment.
For tech. It’s doing really well.
CoronitaParticipant
I would agree that Asian eating is generally healthier and cheaper because it involves preparing food and not packaged items. It’s too much starch and refined flour for me. Asian food is also too salty (some call that flavorful, but I prefer flavor to come from the natural ingredients than from added salt/flavor).
Having said all that, I make my food Asian fusion and modify it for my healthy eating.I love Zion’s market. I was told they own farms around the region, so the produce/fruit is actually farm to table. Some of it doesn’t look “beautiful” but it’s better for you because you’re not eating all the wax/pesticide.
I like to watch Pai’s Hot Kitchen on youtube. She has a channel to teach Thai cooking and she’s really chef who’s studied Cordon Bleu. I was told her cooking is very authentic. But I only use her general instructions and modify it.
For everyday cooking, I would make an Asian fusion dish and put it on a bed of salad (chipotle style with at least 3 times the salad) with a little brown rice, beans, lentils, an apple, etc…
Uh.. I wouldn’t call Kung Pao Chicken, Pot Stickers, Egg Rolls, Fried Rice, Peking Duck healthy… I wouldn’t call Korean BBQ “healthy” either…
Healthy choices (or unhealthy ones) can be found in pretty much any culture… Salad and baked potato would be healthy if it wasn’t for all that butter, cheese, for example.
CoronitaParticipant

Lol.. In that ad it says that the Cerritos store is selling 30 POUNDS of napa cabbage for 99 cents total….
I think if you go to Vons, 99 cents won’t even buy you one head of cabbage…I’m really disappointed they price discriminate between the stores. In San Diego, 99 cents buys you only 5 lbs of oranges, while as in san diego that 99 cents buys you 10 lbs of the same oranges. Sheesh, what a ripoff!
LoL. On a more serious not, I’m pretty sure you can make a lot of different dishes with cabbage if you do some research.
What the heck are you going to do with 30 lbs of cabbage if you aren’t running a restaurant. I mean, it’s not like you can keep it for a long time..
Meanwhile, 5lbs of oranges at Vons this week… “Sale price” $5….
http://weeklyspecials.vons.com/customer_Frame.jsp?drpStoreID=2119&showFlash=falseLol….
CoronitaParticipant

The first step to saving a lot of money off or your groceries is shopping at places like Zion Markets off of clairemont instead of places like Vons or Ralph’s at full price.
I think the last time I was there at Zion, I bought 3lbs of peaches for like 89 cents total, when Vons and Ralph’s were selling peaches for like $1.50 per pound…
And yes folks, they were USA peaches, not grown in China…
http://www.utsandiego.com/news/2013/jun/25/zion-market-san-diego-relocation-clairemont-mesa/%5B/quote%5D
Exactly. Here’s Zion’s sale for this week:
http://www.zionmarket.com/sale/store1.htmYou can get 4.4lb box of Korean grape for $7.99, 7lb of lobok for $0.99, 3lb of Fuji apple for $0.99, 4lb of Kabocha squash for $0.99, 2lb of persimmon for $0.99.
As for those who say, you can’t have steak and potato and live with that budget. Of course you can’t. That’s like saying I can’t afford a house in Carmel Valley while making $100k/year, so it’s impossible to buy a house. There are many ways to live with your budget. You just have to open your eyes and your mind.
CoronitaParticipant
I once saw a TV show about one of those coupon shopper fanatics. Some lady managed to buy $1000 worth of groceries and pay only $10 or so (I don’t remember the exact numbers but they were extreme.)
It took many hours of prep time and many hours in the store.
One issue was what she actually got; I recall that she had two cartfuls of cake frosting mix. She did get a helluva bargain.
Well, there’s a point of diminishing returns on excessive coupon clipping.. I mean, it doesn’t exactly make sense to save $2 extra on something that ends up costing you $4/gallon to get there unless you were going to be there to begin with…
I consider myself to be an opportunistic coupon clipper… But I almost never buy food things that are full price. I’d rather change my eating selection for that week or two and buy the stuff that’s on sale.
CoronitaParticipant
Don’t buy paper towels that enrich the Koch brothers.
I just buy a big pack of regular towels at Costco in the auto department to use as rags. Then I wash them.
Most OTC medications just mask the symptoms. Don’t need them. And better not to use them.
Oh geesh.. That’s like say, don’t buy a an Apple product because it’s assembled by Foxconn.
Or for that matter, don’t buy anything electronics because it contributes to the People’s Republic of China.

CoronitaParticipant

do you need several ipads or several phones?
get rid of the old one when you buy something new.
Ah yes…
For Android, there’s a need for different versions of Android… Lollipop, KitKat, Jellybean. For most cases, I can get by reflashing the phone/tablet. Not always… Then there’s the issue of Samsung’s version of KitKat isn’t exactly the same as LG’s version of KitKat..Which isn’t the same as Asus’ version 4.4 KitKat. And when I do figure out and workaround all the peculiarly, I get to repeat the fun all over when Google comes out with lollipop on their Nexus devices, with OEM’s trailing to upgrade devices afterwards..
As far as Apple….. Interesting tyidbit.. Once you upgrade to say iOS 8.1, there really isn’t an easy way to downgrade back down to iOS 7.1.2 after Apple stops signing 7.1.2. Which means, you need to keep some devices on 7.1.2 for verifying compatibility while buying new devices that support 8.1…
yeah. And then if you have 3 kids with 6 devices each …
Which is exactly why I stopped at 1 🙂
