CoronitaParticipant
Thanks, flu. I have no condition right now (except some actinic keratoses on my forehead that any old dermatologist can take care of). What I’m looking for is a new dermatologist who will give me a careful and thorough skin cancer screening every 6 months.
It’s good to hear that UCSD doctors are patient and take their time. I have no problem waiting for an appointment, as I can schedule my every-6-months exam well in advance.
Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks
Sent you a pm.
CoronitaParticipant
how does one break into Android development? I have done a bit of it but not officially at any job. I just haven’t had an opportunity yet on a project.
I wouldn’t work for free for someone else that wants an app written. No free lunch. What I would do is think of something you think you would like to have on your Android or iPhone that is relatively easy to do and just write an app to do it, even if an app already exists.
For example, I hate organizing my receipts. So I wrote something that after I take a picture of a receipt, I pick which folder it gets uploaded to on google drive, so at tax time, I don’t have to deal with the current mess I’m dealing with.
And awhile ago, I wrote a stupid mileage log app that just records the time you drive to your next business meeting, capturing start time, end time, and distance using the GPS apis, which then gets exported to a .CSV file. Wasn’t that hard to do, and it doesn’t have to have a fancy UI.
This will also test to see how interested you really are in wanting to learn.
CoronitaParticipant
Thanks for the offer, flu, I really appreciate that.
I haven’t checked with UCSD; I generally use Scripps. They’re close by and in my ppo. That’s a good idea though. Expand my search a bit. Problem is, I can’t really tell just by looking at their online info. Most of them will have propaganda on there saying how thorough their exams are. But in real life, it generally turns out not so much.
If your doctor knows someone he/she thinks is really good, I’d love to hear it. Thanks.
Zk, PM me about specifically what you’re looking for (condition, location(s) of body where you might be concerned, any additional details of the condition or potential of the condition you might be concerned, and I’ll ask my doctor for a recommendation.
he doctors at UCSD all tend to be patient and take there time, mainly because I think many of them do it for the research/education benefit. The biggest drawback of UCSD is it’s really hard to get an appointment right away, because I guess they see a lot of people.
Your PPO I’m fairly certain will include all the doctors in UCSD, since they pretty much take every insurance (which probably explains why they are busy). Plus it wouldn’t hurt to get a second or third opinion (except maybe you pay for the additional visits)..Then again, if you’re like me, you end up hitting the maximum out of pocket expense every year, so what’s an extra doctor visit or two or three? 🙁
CoronitaParticipant
My oldest kid(12) is in OCD mode with the iPad and laptop. I have restricted his time and he has been sneaking on. My wife correctly wants to let him use it more this summer, but have it be guided into more constructive hours. Left to his own he will spend all day on games.
So she found “scratch”, anyone familiar with it? Any other self guided programs that have some merit? https://scratch.mit.edu/info/faq/
He also has his own Mind Storm robot, so we have been letting him find sites to work with that.
Yes, actually I started to try to get my 9 year old using scratch… It’s not that easy for a 9 year old, but there’s plenty of exercises on it.
Also, supposedly, there are folks that run Scratch on a Raspberry Pi, and can use it to control hardware over GPIO, but I haven’t investigated much into that.
You or your wife or both might need to spend some time to figure stuff out yourself, but I think there are plenty of internet stuff available to guide you through it…
You can buy a raspberry pi from amazon. It will set you back about $30-50.
My kid has a hard time just “programming” without seeing/touching something physical, which is why I wanted to get get the hardware stuff working….(It’s on my todo list…)
The other thing I was thinking about was getting a programable drone. (Ok, maybe I’m just making an excuse for myself to get one one)
CoronitaParticipantHave your checked with UCSD?
I can ask my oncologist for a referral, but fortunately (knock on wood), I haven’t had to deal with skin related issues yet…

Just jog your memory a little as to what happened in your well-established “hometown,” Pt Loma (SD) between 2008 and 2011, paramount. It had a few MAJOR fixers which sold 30-40% under the market during that time frame and a few (VERY few) short sales (not sure HOW short). But for the most part, the PL market was stagnant to improving there during that time frame, depending on micro-area of the listing. There were never very many listings at one time there because when sellers don’t HAVE to sell in a stagnant or down market, they won’t list! The major difference in residential RE values between the IE cities and the established cities in coastal counties (for example) is primarily due to the differences in types of owners. In the established areas, the owners have far less debt than a homeowner in a new or newer construction tract, on average, regardless of their income or the value of surrounding homes. In many established micro areas, most of the homes are owned free and clear. Long-term owner solvency has EVERYTHING to do with RE values remaining stable.
BG: Markets change. And yes, the 1%ers will always do well (coastal. RSF, etc…) and were not as affected by the 2008 crash like the 99%ers in Temecula. San Diego like the Bay Area is also positively gentrified.
There is little doubt that many Temecula shoppers also shop the areas you mentioned, most – by far – see the value in Temecula.
Also allow me to remind you that the Temecula Valley has a population somewhere north of 300k.
Chula Vista has increased in population as well … from 52K in 1986 to about 277K today. But that hasn’t made the quality of life better … for ANY resident. Instead, it’s been eroded. Just like Temecula, the freeways are choked down here for at least four hours per day and a large portion of the worker bees residing in newer construction located along the SR 125 corridor (a toll road) are apparently taxed to the max (MR and 1-3 HOAs) so much so that they can’t see fit to use their toll road for commuting purposes. Instead, they make 8-12 mile jaunts thru OUR surface streets from I-5 or I-805 eastward to and from work every day turning a simple four mile drive on H street or Telegraph Cyn Rd into a 35 minute ordeal for the rest of us.
I’m going to be passing thru Temec and beyond this week (up to the SR-91) and am NOT looking forward to the Temec/Murrietta parking lot on I-15. It’s even worse up there since the road was widened … absolutely horrific. I have NO IDEA how Temec residents even get their errands done.
Having “north of 300K” residents hasn’t done anything for your quality of life, paramount. You could get around faster in Pt Loma, … h@ll, even during sub-base and SPAWARS “rush hours.”
Come on let’s be real here. Temecula’s booming population has been awesome for real estate re-appreciation. Folks that bought low or folks that held on did well. Very well. Probably closet doubling since bottom. That definitely beats any of my properties I bought. Traffic there is no worse or better than any other congested freeway if you’re heading the wrong commute direction.
I regret not buying a home there when the opportunity arose. I was stupid not to. I’m happy for the folks for whatever reason took advantage of it (whether they actively bought, or just held on and got lucky…)Whatever…. The point isn’t why one bought or held on…The only thing that matters in the end results, which is all the same.
And maybe if people bought more real estate, they don’t need to deal with commute traffic. Because maybe in the future they don’t need to go to work during commute hours. It’s sure one of my goals in the future.

CoronitaParticipantI think I did find one additional expense. I need to do a jaw CT scan, which neither my medical nor my dental insurance will pay for.
Medical insurance says it’s dental. Dental insurance says it’s not covered unless there’s a medical need, and then it would be medical insurance.

The last time I bought a large quantity from Costco, quite a few expired unused.Of course, you could buy and then give them away to your Piggington pals!
I hate condoms.
Besides, I don’t think they are one size fits all. Not to imply that I’m trying to compare anything, one way or the other….Just stating a possible fact….
CoronitaParticipant
What kind of rent would a place like that generate? I’m referring to the monthly rent – not taking into account expenses, taxes, etc.
Right now. Close to about $1400/month, maybe a little less.
