CoronitaParticipant
LOL I don’t think the sky is falling,
But even former gov Brown said, only a reasonable pension should be guaranteed, I think leaving a door open for default and restructure.
I wasnt talking about you. Come on now, I know you’re pretty sensible…. I was talking about a lot of the other “ooo it’s going to crash and burn anyway now” that came before you…
And there’s got to be a medical diagnosis for those that get high on seeing other people fail.

CoronitaParticipantit amazes me how many people would rather soak and bake in doomsday mentality despite how over and over again the sky has not fallen and the world has not ended.
All these folks soaking in the economic doomsday scenario and dreaming for it are no different than the crazy religious nut jobs that think Jesus Christ is coming and the end of the world is near.
I suspect folks that fall into this trap of doomsday thinking have a miserable life and only wish other people end up as miserable as them so they feel better. News flash… ain’t gonna happen… There’s got to be some mental medical disorder that describes this…And hopefully a public healthcare option in the US will eventually help people get treated.
CoronitaParticipantDealbreaker for me on the Tesla Model 3….
The insurance cost.
With a $500 deductible on collision/comprehensive, it’s $1125/6month to insure….That’s actually a few dollars/year less than insuring a Porsche 911s…and I balked on the insurance on the 911s. If I had to choose the two, I’d get the 911s…lol.

Oceanside is gentrifying very quickly.

yes… I think this is a net positive for the community.

CoronitaParticipantYou do realize why they are doing this right?
They are building their own 5G modem in house and intentionally setup shop here to poach talent from Qualcomm. They already have an ARM solution on the phone and it’s just a matter of time before they move that over to the laptop and desktop and cut x86 out. Most of these jobs will probably be chip design jobs, though probably some supporting embedded SW jobs will open up too.
Google is doing the same thing. They are here also, you just don’t hear too much about them, but they are also working on 5G modem an an internal SoC to my understanding, and they have been poaching folks from Qualcomm, Broadcom, and Intel.
Intel is already out here in Rancho Bernardo trying to poach people from Qualcomm and former Broadcom (folks call them the leftover engineers)
On top of that Amazon is expanding their footprint, and Walmart Labs just added a large footprint in Carlsbad right next to the GoPro office.
Qualcomm employs roughly 13,000 people in San Diego, so there’s plenty of lateral movements that can happen. even if local talent is already limited, that’s ok… I am sure there are plenty of people in the Bay Area that would gladly move back to San Diego after moving there for opportunity. I already have a few buddies checking the opportunity. When you get paid an top comp package of $300k as an engineer up there and still have problems finding housing…you end up working there 3-4 years and GTF out of there and move back here, laughing all the way to the bank. And now, they will have opportunity awaiting.
Great news for tech workers that will have even more choice and better pay. Bad news for startups that want to try to get away with paying peanuts for a hairbrain idea….No one works for free..Things are looking pretty swell in the tech community here. At least for now for workers….Probably also good news for landlords and property owners near the tech hubs here Carlsbad, Sorrento Valley, RB, and to a lesser extent, downtown.
CoronitaParticipant
Oh MY GOD. An 0.1% tax on trades that will mostly affect HFT types. Oh, the HORROR!
Says someone that doesn’t want to work and wants an big crash and score a big “win” like winning the lottery.
CoronitaParticipantIf you really don’t give a shit… then really don’t give a shit. and you don’t need to leave to accomplish that.
I seriously doubt money is a problem for self sustaining yourself here. That might be a problem for some and create stress I doubt that’s the case for you.
Me, I like to work. I like deal with rental properties… And I think I found my balance of hobbies and interests.
CoronitaParticipant
”focusing on building trucks/suvs see demand fall off the cliff due to fuel costs…”
Just be glad you don’t live in France lol.
I think I remember 5 year old big trucks etc.. going for 1/5 the purchase price when gas got to 5 dollars a gallon.
Maybe that is what I need to do (I only need the truck for short local trips mostly, other than that I drive my small 4 banger getting >35 MPG).
One day I want to buy a cheap used Tesla and replace the batteries with hopefully cheap replacements.
I remember buying my BMW X5 (that has 6 cylinders) new for less than the cost of a Ford Edge FWD only. Lol….
People asked me “why did you waste your money on a SUV from BMW when you could have paid a lot less for something like a Ford Edge”…. And I said, “no I couldn’t have. I bought the cheaper of the two…” Left their head scratching…lol. Funny part is the MPG between the two weren’t that different.I remember buying my dad’s BMW 550 with a TTv8 with a $10k cash discount. Lol x2.
Surprisingly, knock on wood, my X5 has been fairly reliable… Oil, brake fluid , brake rotors/pads, and tires..
CoronitaParticipantI think you’re not thinking that a typical american consumer. For a typical american consumer, the actual MSRP of the car does not nearly matter as much as “what are the payments I need to make to be able to drive that car?”
Most people do not buy a new car outright. Most people, if they want to obtain a new car, they either
1) Lease
or
2) Take out a loan to buywhere #1 is more popular these days….And for a lot of people, who insist on always have the latest and greatest, it makes sense…Especially when it comes to the more luxury brands, most of these cars depreciate like crazy, are a PITA to maintain…So for many many people, it’s not about an entry level BMW 3 series starts at $40k these days. It’s about “what is my monthly payment going to be?”
As long as people can make the monthly payment and as long as they still have their job, and as long as gas prices stay cheap, people won’t care about MSRP.
What’s going to hurt automakers, are the ones that make sketchy leases/loans to subprime borrowers who then can’t make the payments. A lot of times, automakers get greedy and do just that to prop up sales numbers. Mitsubishi did just that and got into a lot of trouble. Some of the big 3 US companies are probably doing that right now. Ford got into a world of hurt doing that before Mullaly took over and cleaned it up, and sold of Mazda, Jaguar, etc, etc, etc.
I think it will be interesting to see what happens when all these US car companies who are focusing on building trucks/suvs see demand fall off the cliff due to fuel costs…And this time, they won’t have a small car/sedan portfolio left.
Me? I would never take out a loan to buy a car or even lease unless a company was paying for it. If I can’t buy a car with cash, I won’t buy.
CoronitaParticipantMars!!!
CoronitaParticipantBuying a Porsche SUV is as bad as buying a Porsche with an automatic. Just say no and get a real Porsche
CoronitaParticipantFunny this thread came up because now that they are taking orders for the base model at $35k, I might order one and add a 7th car to my garage.
6250 EV tax credits puts this below $30k before tax license etc… Hyundai sonatas are ringing up near that these days.My 2017 Miata was around that price after s plan racer discount pricing .
I am thankful a lot of people bought into the initial hype and spent close to $50k+ for this car so Tesla can continue to build these base models for those of us that don’t want to pay $50k for a car that imho looks very similar to a Mazda 3. Now that the initial teething of a first year production run has settled, it’s looking to be compelling for me.
But man, those base model wheels sure are fugly.
March 1, 2019 at 1:38 PM in reply to: Black friday: Review of Google Wifi routers and Samsung frontload washer/dryer #811933
CoronitaParticipantI am afraid that these samsung washer and dryers are expensive POS that will eventually break down and cost you several hundreds of dollars to replace their circuit boards or electronics, that arguably (according to consumer reports) don’t really clean that much better than other top loading washers and dryers.
Meanwhile, your run of the mill, no frills Whirlpool mechanical top load washer does an excellent job of cleaning and will last about 20+years. And when it does break down, usually is a stupidly simple $20 or door switch or mechanical timer or something else like that.
Fact is, companies went stupid when they started to stick so much electronics and software in what would be reliably dumb appliances…in order to make them look “smart”, when “dumb” worked just fine…
LG is slightly better than Samsung. After working with the Samsung on how they make phones and tvs, I wouldn’t want to touch any of their products….Talk about cutting corners everywhere…
I wasn’t surprised when Samsung Note 7 spontaneously combusted. I was surprised (in kinda of a ha ha, that was funny, I didn’t think it would be possible sort of way) when Samsung washers were exploding back in 2016…lol…
Hope you bought them at costco with the 2 year extended warranty. I am afraid you will need it.
Never buy new washer and dryers for a rental. It’s going to get beaten up. Most new washer and dryers are a lot less reliable than older ones and will break down a lot more times than older ones. Most new washers and dryers are a lot more expensive to repair than older ones. And most of them don’t clean any better than older ones… And there’s no aethetics to washers and dryers. They are stored in the corners of a room/garage/etc where no one sees them regularly and no one really cares what they look like… A lot of much more reliable preowned washer dryers, at 10cents/dollar because when people move, they don’t want to carry them……If you are spending more than $300 on a washer or dryer for a rental (and in some cases $300 total for a full size washer AND dryer), you’re doing it wrong. Way wrong.
CoronitaParticipantBy the time you are ready to retire, if you can’t come up with cost of property tax, even with the max 2% increase per year, you aren’t really retired and shouldn’t claim to be. That would be pretty pathetic, and you should fire your financial advisor if you have one.
