Can I just reiterate the lock box point? We agreed to one with our last rental, and it was a NIGHTMARE. There were agents stopping by without notice, without an appointment, and knocking on our door and waiting 30 seconds before barging in. We felt very unsafe and put out, and finally told the landlord to remove it.
She was desperate to have the house rented or sold and thought that by removing the lock box, she would lose out on potential clients, so she put up a fight. We ended up threatening legal action before she finally relented and had her agent remove it.Don’t do it.

CocoaGoddessParticipantWell, you specifically asked about the Otay Ranch/Windingwalk development and Brookfield Homes, and I happen to fit that bill. We closed on our home last May and moved in in June.
We moved to Chula Vista after renting a home in the Coronado Cays for a year. The area was not our style, and I fell in love with Chula Vista after going house hunting with a couple of friends who were looking to buy down here.
We don’t regret our decision one bit. I don’t work, and my husband works at the Amphib Base in Coronado though, so we don’t have the same commute issues as you might have. But honestly, the traffic coming into Otay Ranch is not as horrific as people make it sound, and I’ve only had to use the toll roads twice. If you take Telegraph Canyon, you’re going to run into some major problems. If you take Olympic Parkway, you’ll be fine.
Our daughter is a teen who attends Eastlake Middle School, and will attend Olympian High in July. Our son has autism and is enrolled in a GREAT program at Parkview Elementary. We came from one of the best districts in the country (Montgomery County Maryland) and also the Coronado School District, and honestly, we’ve been very happy with the schools out here, and I think my kid has been able to maintain the same standard of learning she had in Maryland and in Coronado.
And just some stats, we are a young black couple in our thirties. My husband is a Navy Doctor, and most of our neighbors are military, which was very surprising to us. In just our cluster of homes, there is another black family, two Asian families, and the rest are white. No Hispanics that I’ve seen YET, but I’m sure they are around. I just haven’t seen them.
If you have any other questions about the neighborhood, the quality of Brookfield homes, the association or anything else, please feel free to ask.

CocoaGoddessParticipantHi,
We rented in Coronado for a little over a year before buying our townhome this past May. It’s a nice community, very quiet and bike friendly. Full of cranky old people, and for a young black family like us, we felt like we just didn’t fit in. It was a relief when we finally left, though I enjoy the area much more now as a visitor.
Great library and park, mediocre restaurants, poorly stocked neighborhood grocery stores.
Some of our neighbors both in the Cays and in the Village complained of mice, but we found that the ant problem was uncontrollable, and it seriously affected our quality of life.
Also, the beach has a terrible fly problem. The last time we went to the beach in September, we could only stay for an hour because we were practically molested by all of the flies.I don’t know what it is about Coronado and why pests are so attracted to it, but it certainly is a valid concern if you want to live there.
