Participant
I’m over 50. My 40th was much more a bummer than my 50th. My mom was dealing with terminal cancer, Sept 11th had just happened (which definitely puts things in perspective.)
Between 40 and 50 both parents and my brother died of cancer. That puts a sharp focus on mortality. It’s when I started obsessing with early retirement… so I don’t drone away at a field a no longer love, and then keel over one day, full of regrets.
My husband is older than me by almost 10 years – so I always feel young compared to him. He’s more youthful than me in most ways, though. He’s got longevity on his side – his dad died last year at 90, his mom is 87 and still going strong, physically.
I relish birthdays – at this point they are indications I’m closer to my retirement and freedom. A time when I’ll control my time and activities.
Like Rustico, I’ve got youngish kids (11 and 13) – so I need to be healthy long enough to get them launched at minimum. Even if I died as young as my mom did (67) I should be able to accomplish that.
Holy cow! That’s a terrible story. Sorry to hear all of that UCGal.
My concerns are the same as your for kids though. Gotta at least get them in college before I punch my ticket.

ParticipantWhat you may or may not know is that the first year is a purposeful “washout” progam in engineering.
It is designed to purposely over stress the student and to make them reconsider the program.
To seperate the hackers from the non-hackers… Its analagous to hell week in the navy SEALs except this last a year.
For you son to survive… and makes dean’s list is a tremendous accomplisment and you should be very proud.
It damn near killed me…

ParticipantYeah… I like the show too…
Hate to say this but the best writing on tv anymore seems to involve adult cartoons.

No excuse for what she did.

ParticipantOn a serious note though I am surprised after the Air France incident that the motors’ computers are tied to a independent GPS signal as well. I am not sure how important positional information actually is but if you are trying to account for strange anomalies to the motors I would think basic information like altitude, speed, and heading from independent sources instead of relying on a “central” computer whose own inputs may be in question.
I know that the motors are all monitored in real time though an engineers eyes are not actually looking at the motor unless it is running out of spec but it can serve as another source of information.
I also suspect that if the communication channel is not able to be switched off like the transponder is then the engineers have looked at the motor’s performance characteristics and the authorities have drawn their conclusion about the flight from that.

Participant
Crazy as that seemed, it did help sell more airplanes, CE. Today, you could wave goodbye to your license, your job, and probably your retirement package if you pulled a stunt like that.
That’s not a denial I’m hearing! 😛

Participant

Hi Flyer,
When you’re flying a large aircraft, does it feel like you’re sitting in the nose of a gigantic aircraft, strapped into a smaller plane, or driving a bus?
Always wondered this…
doofrat, I’ve heard lots of different perspectives of this from other pilots, but, for me, I feel like I’m sitting at the end of a long tube–viewing the world below–with complete control in three dimensions. It’s an awesome experience from the front row seats.
Admit it… Just once before you retire though… You would like to pull a “Tex Johnson”!
hehe…

You start to feel that the sky is the limit as you learn some incrediable concepts…
It is only after years of doing super-tech type work does that engineering degree begin to lose its luster…
The years in engineering school was some of the coolest in your life… You get to sit around with your friends and brainstorm… It was joyful some days… other times it was like having a gun to your head…
Tell him to enjoy every minute of it! Those heady days will never come again.

Love the first part, but think your last sentence does not necessarily have to be true. Some people find their calling in life when they’re in their 70s or later!
i dont have the heart to tell him it’s all downhill from here. and it may not be true. while the trajectory may be generally down, there are gonna be some small rallies along the way to bring in some sucker hope!
It’s not all down hill. He will have the first few years after college as well where he is young and flexible and can take risks and new career paths as he wants. Those are good days too and I made some life long friends in those years.
It’s just after we trade our freedom/instability for love/stability that we ALL HAVE TO PLOD the course we have established for ourselves. Dream time is over for most of us…
That being said I have had some huge personal highlights in my career such as;
Being assigned as a 9/11 first responder (didn’t actually go as it was deemed unnecessary)
Chopper flights in to remotes sections of wilderness. Woot!
Lived in 10 cities.
Lived in Alaska! Alaska! Damn crazy place!
Built some of the largest in-building networks in the world.
Meet/seen celebrities when dealing with the Las Vegas casinos.
Traveled the US extensively (missed out on several gigs in Sweden, Brazil, and Italy).
Meet life long friends in these travels including ppl like SDDuuuude.
And most of all… Met my wife on these travels.
So its not all downhill…
Just not as romantic as those first days…

ParticipantI would like to buy a house.
Problem is I haven’t seen anything that is moving me. Therefore I have not pre-qualified.
I am actually going to do it just on the off-chance that something appears on the market that I like.
You know… the whole “Causality and correlation” thing.

ParticipantHere is the thing about video…
You have to get the whole episode. You have to get him approaching you… Leaving and everything else in between.
I recently watched a video about how a news team, in Australia, followed a man whose soon had been accused for something. It was of some importance. Well one news team followed another that followed the man for twenty minutes and stuck their cameras in his face the man asked repeatedly to please give him some space and then the eventually got to close and he pushed them back. The camera crew then proceeded to call the man a terrorist and then things got ugly. The second crew documented all of this and eventually discredited the first because, of course, all they showed of the man is him losing his cool.
Point is that even video is suspect due to editing.
It has to appear that the video shows the whole event start to finish otherwise it will be suspect.
Regards,

Participant
No arrests so far, when he came out with a gun to diffuse the situation I told him to go call the cops if he couldn’t deal with things. He did, and the police were completely unimpressed by any thing either of us had to say. They would not tell him to leave me alone even though he admitted I had rights to be doing what I was doing. They simply said he doesn’t have to listen to them. They may have told him not to give the impression of trapping me with his vehicle or they may not have. They do not want to deal with any of this kind of garbage. 99% of it does not end with someone actually shot even though a lot of it does because there are so many semi-crazies. Who knows what kind of lies the other guy tells the cops.
All the worst threats were when I was alone but the police told me they really didn’t care even if there were witnesses …the guy has some skill at trying to manipulate people sort of getting in trouble. The cops really want this stuff to go to civil court. Maybe after an injunction or something like that they would care more. There is so much of this stuff and so many people like this…when you call them they just treat you like you are as much a part of the problem as the other person.
I have talked with a lawyer even before the coercive letters and more harassment. He basically said what someone else on this thread said…court, even when you prevail doesn’t make a leopard change his spots…
A lot of people think video is the thing , the police tell people to take video, of course they do, but they want videos of hard core crimes not intimidation/bullying or even blatant verbal threats, yes he tried to slap the phone out of my hand it’s pretty evident on the video but not perfectly, but the cops won’t care!
Lol! He came out with a gun to diffuse the situation? Hardly believe a judge would buy that.
This is not a rational person.
