ParticipantBubblesitter,
I haven’t heard of a high end Walmart, but I can guarantee you that the City of Carlsbad will require them to be high end. The City has complete and total control over what the final product will look like. And they will have enough public pressure that it will look like the Taj Mahal by the time it’s built. You have to understand something here. The property has been zoned for a shopping center for years. Anyone who bought property near there knew this. Now as long as Wal-mart complies with the Zoning Ordinance and makes it look high end there’s nothing that the City can do. Walmart will sue them silly if they’re denied and they’d have a good case, too. Have you ever heard of property rights?
If anyone had a problem with a Walmart or similar type store going there, they should have complained as soon as the propery was zoned for it.
As far as traffic congestion is concerned, a Walmart will generate the same traffic as any other community shopping center with identical square footage. That’s a poor argument, and once again, it’s zoned for that amount of traffic.
I really don’t understand people’s animosity towards Walmart. But hey, just vote with your money. If you don’t like it, then don’t shop there. If there’s enough of you doing the same thing, the store will close down due to lack of business. But somehow I don’t see that happening.

ParticipantIf you hate Walmart so much, then stop shopping there. It’s pretty easy to send a message in a free market. Don’t give them your business.
However, I will tell you that it will be their highest end store in the country and won’t even look like a wal-mart. It’s funny because if they were to put a different name on the front door then nobody would care.
I can also guarantee you that all the people complaining about this will be shopping there as soon as it opens.

ParticipantI’ve had good experience with Craigslist. We moving out of our rental and don’t quite have enough junk for a garage sale, so we’ve been selling individual items on Craigslist. Bookcase, doghouse, table, even some books and DVDs.

ParticipantGo to the Planning Dept. instead. They will set you straight. It all depends on the jurisdiction that the land is within. Zoning ordinances vary from city to city.

ParticipantI’ve driven through that area every day for the last few years. I haven’t noticed much of any changes. I think the brown that you’re seeing if from the lack of rainfall over the last 2 years. Those homes are on large lots with plenty of open space between homes and roads. With out much rain, all of the open space is now brown.
The one thing that I have noticed is that traffic through the area hasn’t increase as much as I would have suspected with the opening of Del Sur. I don’t believe Del Sur is doing well at all.

ParticipantI was out for a run last night and noticed a professional photographer set up in front of an empty house taking some pretty fancy photos. He had his tri-pod out in the street with some fancy red cones around him, like he was some traffic surveyor. The driveway and all the sidewalks were hosed down to give it a nice glow. All the lights were on inside the house (which was totally empty). All this right at dusk to get the perfect light. I thought it was true sign of the times.
