I know that the road closures have hit local business up there pretty hard.
Has it affected real estate prices?
burghManParticipantI’ve never had to deal with a mechanic’s lien but I’ve always been paranoid about them and have read up on them quite a bit. The system seems to favor the contractor over the homeowner, but the homeowner does have rights.
Start here, there’s lots of other resources through google:
I am not a lawyer or even a real-estate person, but IMO this pool guy really cannot file a legitimate lien against you. Of course they can still create some headache, like in any legal dispute.
burghManParticipantI do live in CA, but I’m from an industrial city similar to Detroit that ends in “burgh” (note the “h”)
In the past year I traveled to Detroit (Rochester Hills) quite a bit. My co-workers were making fun of the fact that I had to go to Detroit, but I was pleasantly surprised when I got there the first time.
I have lived in CA for a long time though. I guess I picked up the habit of putting “the” in front of road names.
burghManParticipantCaroline Chen, a real estate broker in Troy, Michigan, says she’s received “tons of calls” from people in mainland China.
It may seem like a small point, but Troy is not Detroit. It’s even in a different county. There are some very nice areas around Detroit, including Troy, north of the “8 Mile.” Michigan has some very nice, upscale cities (even though it is very flat and the weather is not great.) Although the heydey of the auto industry is gone, there is still lots of industry in Michigan.
The problems with Detroit are mostly in the city proper. Drive south from Troy to Detroit on I-75 and you can see it the neighborhoods get worse the further you go. By the time you reach downtown, the abandoned buildings and decay are quite obvious even from the highway.
I don’t see the city ever recovering. It seems to be past the point of no return. There are entire neighborhoods that would have to be razed. Maybe it will recover slowly, after many decades it could all be cleaned up, but I don’t think I will see the city of Detroit recover in my lifetime.
burghManParticipantHow much memory do you have? If you only have 2GB, an upgrade to 4GB could make a big difference. Crucial.com can show you what memory you have and need and give you a quote, although you can actually get it cheaper elsewhere. If you want a whole new system and all you do is basic stuff then a low-end box at Dell or HP or Costco in the $300-$400 price range will be fine, just make sure it has at least 4GB RAM.
Cheap laptops are pretty good these days too, you really can’t buy a new one at any price that would be inadequate for basic stuff.

Sorry, did I spoil the fun?
burghManParticipant
I already mentioned where the bigger dollars are before. Android Mobile SW currently and soon to be Windows 8 possibly.
What kind of apps are corporations developing that is driving the need for mobile developers? Are they mostly smaller companies trying to be the next Instagram, or are big corporations staffing projects for Android apps? Many mobile apps seem like they would be rather small projects, compared to something like desktop or enterprise software.
Thanks!
burghManParticipantMy hobby is rock climbing.
I guess it has some things in common with sex:
– Most people prefer doing it with a partner.
– It’s possible to have multiple partners, but it can get complicated.
– Generally safe, if you take the right precautions.
– As you try new things, you might end up in some awkward positions.
– Helps to be flexible if you want to do the really challenging stuff.
– If you try to photograph someone doing it, you usually end up with an uninteresting picture of their backside.Unlike sex, not everyone likes it.

burghManParticipantHere’s why I think it is so easy to disprove the “birther” claims:
The birthers claim that the birth certificate that Obama produced is not legitimate, that it somehow doesn’t look right.
So what is it supposed to look like?
Were other babies born in Hawaii on Obama’s birthday, perhaps even in the same hospital? I would think so. What does their birth certificate look like? Is it different from Obama’s?
Why can’t anyone show an example of what a proper birth certificate is supposed to look like? It should not be that hard to find an example.
