ParticipantI was with you up until the Charles Manson reference. Most criminals are just that, but Charles Manson was not a natural phenomenon, he was created.
We sent Charles to prison at a very early age (13 I think). He was beaten, molested, and worse by the society that was supposed to “protect” him. His early childhood include episodes like being sold by his mother for a “pitcher of beer”. His moral view was developed by the worst that we as a society have to offer. He was more intelligent and charismatic than most, and his bent view of the world led him develop a group of like minded marginally attached followers.
Although his individual behavior was not predictable, the fact that we have thousands of like children in the same circumstances does predict that Helter Skelter was not the last insane act grown in our own prisons.
I see dozens of “bangers” every month that have committed like or worse crimes, just not to as famous a set of victims. Just a few miles south of Tucson in Nogales Sonora, the narco terrorists are now skinning their victims before be-heading them. Many developed their skills in our prison system. MS13, Los ZETAs are all a result of American decisions. Our prisons are just finishing schools for the criminally insane.
The shooting in Tucson was tragic, but not isolated. We are a violent society in a violent world. And we can hide it reasonably well until a “National Personality” is the victim.

ParticipantI am afraid that the right vs the left is not a line, but a circle. When you get to either extreme, the methods are the same. Both rapped in the flag one carrying the cross and the other a little red book.
Socialists and communists have killed as many people as the fascists. Throughout history, anyone claiming to have “the answer” for all of the people, has resorted to violence to “rescue” the non-believers.
Liberal used to mean, “open minded” vs. conservative which meant “traditional” – happy with the status quo. Today, the “liberals” are every bit as dogmatic as those labeled “conservative”. Even the “great liberals” of today are as vindictive as any conservative. See the story of Norman Finkelstein and Alan Dershowitz.
There are no good guys and bad guys at the extremes, only those seeking their own privilege
And FYI, immigrant bashing in an economic down turn, may be a good thing. If you dont have a border, and import talent, the domestic labor market will continue to deteriorate.
And health care, without a public option may just be a gift to already overpriced insurance providers. And it still doesn’t address health care for “illegals”. A crippling cost to the rest of us.
You don’t need a label to be “open minded”.
And I’m a liberal!

ParticipantArraya,
You state the unfortunate truth. As a society we could hide the insanity with an economy that gave even the marginally sane a path to future success. That path is quickly evaporating.
When the marginally sane, lose any hope for economic success, are armed, and close to homeless – look out. Add drug use, and a real disparity between the haves and have- nots, this will not be the last insane act by an individual toward a politician. This was predictable. I can only hope that this does not trigger a rash of copy cats.
My only surprise is that it was not a banker that fell to the first shots. I see a world of the “haves” surrounded by private security trying to prevent the Inevitable

ParticipantWay back in the day, we passed prop 13 because there was no end in sight to rising property taxes. We set an absolute limit that could not be exceeded without the express vote of the people.
Imagine where we would be today if Prop 13 were not in place. The give aways to state employees would be double, and propertty taxes would be monotonically increasing to pay an ever increasing state employee benefit and pay package. We already have 9% sales tax, 9.6% imcome tax, rising auto and boat taxes. Im only sorry we did not pass a limit on all taxes
