Participant“when S.D. starts to fold”
I agree $111/sqft may be below the lower bound for nicer parts of SD even in a severe recession, but the other price you mentioned, $400K for 2800sqft ($143/sqft) is very probable in nicer neighborhoods. That combined with falling $ may make SD the New Miami for foreign investors. For the EURO folks and Canadians, our $143 today is already looking like $111 of last year.

Participant” I just looked at a brand new 2800 sq ft where I want it to be for 400k with all the upgrades”
temeculaguy,
Is this in Temecula or SD county? Would you mind telling the school district you referred to?

Participant“so it’s $111 a sq ft”
Wow! If this pricing ever comes to nicer parts of SD county, it will be hard to resist moving! (from Rainland, Oregon). Does anyone have a guess on if/when this may happen to Carlsbad/Poway/Penasquitos?

Participant“Coal to-liquids (and coal in general) is plain climate catastrophe—much worse than using gas or oil. The real climate killer (c.f. James Hansen) is coal, not oil and gas.”
Dr Chaos,
I have this basic Chemistry question: Both Petroleum and Coal are fossil fuels. i.e. there were plants/animals/organisms on earth before it became fuel. From where do you think this Carbon entered the biological cycle? Most likely atmospheric CO2. If Atmospheric CO2 caused life forms to evolve and proliferate, why do you think the same amount of CO2, back in atmosphere can cause global climate catastrophe. Something doesn’t seem to compute stoichiometrically. It may become warmer and unpleasant for certain species, including humans but hard to conclude this may cause extinction.

Participant“it is impossible to survive without buying goods that is made in China”
Obviously an exaggeration; It will be difficult, inconvenient and expensive – but not impossible. People have done difficult things like crossing Atlantic to live in strange lands, crossing a Continent in Covered Wagons. Survived Dust Bowl, Great Depression, Wars etc.,
The Standard of Living will be dramatically different in 15 years; but life will go on.
I think running out of Petroleum will have a lot more influence on our lifestyle and society than China.
I believe the financial meltdown to be caused by Baby Boomer’s retirement is still the elephant in the room.

ParticipantReuters obtained a copy of the letter provided to investors today:
“The preliminary estimates show there is effectively no value left for the investors in the Enhanced Leverage Fund and very little value left for the investors in the High-Grade Fund as of June 30, 2007,” according to the letter. A copy of the letter was obtained by Reuters …
“The losses reflected “unprecedented declines in the valuations of a number of highly-rated (AA and AAA) securities,” the letter said.
Update: BSC is down nearly 4 percent as this post is updated in after-hours trading.
Question: What do you think is the probability BSC may collapse? If it does, will that be a “Black Swan” event?

Participant“Also among the top ZIP codes were western Escondido, Rancho Santa Fe and El Cajon.”
“A lot more buyers are looking at what they see as the superior areas and leaving behind areas that aren’t as good in their mind,” said real estate broker Jim Klinge, who specializes in North County coastal properties. “Oceanside is really struggling, there are a lot of houses for sale, hardly any selling…”
When and why did Escondido & El Cajon qualify as ‘Superior’ compared to ‘struggling’ Oceanside?
