Participantreturn of about 4% over time.
If you buy low and sell high, you can do much better, especially if you add tax savings & mortgage leverage. And unlike stocks, it is not hard to see recessions and asset bubbles. Things move at glacial speeds. I definitely like this better than stock market investing.

Participantreal estate is traditionally a horrible investment over the long-term.
Not for us. We did well, thank you. But we are renting now. We will buy again towards the mid to end of the coming recession.

ParticipantI'm going to go back to sleep. Wake me up when something REALLY interesting happens
Hmm… It is 9:28 a.m. It is recession time. You are fired! Now wake up and try to get a new job!

ParticipantPerryChase,
I would be equally concerned about the flip side too!
Read:
However, as Americans lose their money in America, they are bound to look for new places to invest their money.
If Americans lose confidence in America, we won't have much of a competitive advantage.
This is the classic Capital flight scenario that blights weak nations. I am not sure we have a built in immunity to this ill.

Participantjust got $11.5 billion in financing from 40 banks
One question though: Who in his right mind would loan 11B to a sinking ship? I want to open a (FDIC covered) account there (for high rates), but even I am hesitating!
And 62,500 employees losing jobs, man this is a great tragedy whichever way you see it. Bubble bursting is good ; but the human costs are going to be terrible.
