barnaby33ParticipantWhy did you submit a bid? Seems pretty early in the cycle for someone who has been around this board as long as you have.
Josh
barnaby33ParticipantYuck, comes to mind.

barnaby33ParticipantDiamonds are coated in Blood. Don’t let De Beers fool you that just because some diamonds aren’t, they are clean. They help fuel the most brutal conflicts, mostly in Africa but in other places as well.
I told my ex that I would NEVER buy here a diamond unless it was man made. Even then I wasn’t really interested. Lest you think I am more cowardly now, I have said the same to my current girlfriend.

barnaby33ParticipantEducated, witty, handsome, intellectually gifted, yep thats us. I’m not sure what typical San Diego people are, having lived here my whole life we are about as atypical as people get, collectively. So enlighten us a bit about our typicality?

barnaby33ParticipantBud/Miller/Coors will sell alot more beer. Sad to say but its probably true.
People will NOT cook at home more, at least not any healthier.
Sales of BMW and Mercedes entry level cars will go way down, but the 7-series/S-class will only dip.
Teenagers will not work harder, they will give up more hope (most of them anyway.) Where that idea came from I have no clue. As a corollary though, sales of the PS3 will probably not save Sony.
Hummers & granite countertops will be sooooo pre-bubble pop.
Debt will be the new fat, so JG I recommend a startup for financial lap bands!
People will in general get on with their lives much poorer and look for the next big thing, say healthcare services!
Josh
barnaby33ParticipantThere is no requirement that the seller honor a good faith offer at the list price?

barnaby33ParticipantHi Mexico Resident, I would vote for the middle course. Part of the problem is that most retires are on a limited budget, but are still used to an American style life. One of the attractions of Mexico is that its cheaper. As a counter balancing issue, services aren’t readily available (at least at an American level.)
Another issue is the rule of law. Its still quite tenuous in Mexico. Even though crime against gringos isn’t particularly bad in most of Mexico, Americans are still scared. Foreigners are always in a weaker position than a Mexican citizen in the eyes of the law.
The third big issue is ownership. Within 50k of the oceans and borders we can’t own anything. Even though my father has 50 year lease with two guaranteed renewals, its not the same in our eyes as owning.
I think that as these macro issues are worked through more Americans will move south for retirement, and some even to work and build careers. We have a very long way to go though before the trickle south matches the torrent going north.
Josh
barnaby33ParticipantAnd yet JG you pray at the temple of monetary self-indulgence. You live in La Jolla. Hello pot, this is kettle.
Josh
barnaby33ParticipantI’d point out that the last time the US Army was involved in a civil war, we won. And do you know, we didn’t have a single European ally with us at the time?
You mean Vietnam?
Josh
barnaby33ParticipantIf no-one were buying or selling then you have an illiquid market. Better to have a sucker or two paving the way down than none at all. Thats when things get scary for EVERYONE.
Josh
barnaby33ParticipantJG the way you push a certain social agenda, you should run for office. You are that tendentious about it. I was raised pretty much by my mom, dad was at sea most of the time. I turned out better than most. I don’t know that your theory holds water. There are lots of influences on children and interestingly enough freakonomics makes the case that friends have FAR more of an impact on child rearing than parents.
Juice I love those types of posts. You know the type, the fantasy past that never was. People were even more fucked up in the 50’s. More racist, more sexist, more misogynist, but they wore suits to church! They just didn’t report all that incest to the police and there was no myspace for people to explore their sexuality. I won’t defend alot of what goes on as totally kosher, but people are people. A society that gives them the most freedom is probably the happiest one.
Josh
barnaby33ParticipantIs there some belief that downtown is for families with children? as you pointed out PD, there are very few kids down there. I don’t think of any metro downtown as a good place to raise kids, do you have the expectation that there are places where it is?
I suspect that its implied by the nature of the place that its not a good place for kids, but I could be wrong.
