That’s OK, I’m on fixed rate mortgage. What happened to housing price the last time rates went up violently/rapidly? If rate does go up violently/rapidly, at least I can say the money I have in savings and CD would start making something again. Also, I would love to do those 0% balance transfer and stuff it in CD making 5-6% again. I did that pretty successfully several years back.an

Participant

What’s very interesting is, even though the electoral vote was won by a landslide, the popular vote is much closer at 49% vs 49% right now with only 291097 vote separating the two.
That is one way to look at it.
The other way to look at it is that at about 50% of popular vote, Obama is doing about as good as other re-elected presidents in recent history
For example
Clinton (1996) – 49.2%
Bush (2004) – 50.7%Getting reelected with a landslide in national vote seems to be more common before Clinton.
Interesting data. I didn’t know it was that close for past reelected presidents as well. I wonder why?Secondly, why is there such a big discrepancy between the popular vs electoral votes? If it’s due to demographics, would it mean the Republicans are done for unless they start to change their platform? Based on what I heard from various news channels, it seems like the Lantinos and Black votes in some very key state really made a huge difference.

I guess we can expect the next 4 years to be similar to the last 2 years with the house being controlled by the Republicans and Democrats controlling the Senate and the White House. Fiscal cliff, here we come.

Participant
Because SoCal people might irritate you to the point of self-defenestration. Plus, making money in certain industries is easier in SF than in NYC or SD.
So very true and the type of people will never change. It’s harder in other industries.an
Participant1st one is bleh. 2nd one is better but definitely not walkable to food and entertainment. 3rd one is better but again, SOMA << Marina. I can't find the size of the SOMA property. Not the mention the view in the SOMA property is bleh compare to the Marina properties. You're right, you have to live somewhere, so if you have money, why compromise. Why not live in SD for the weather and fly to NY for the culture?
an
Participant
SF has other reasons for being desirable other than later nights. Tech scene, proximity to nature, less harsh climate than NYC.
Yea, it’s a middle ground between NY and SD, but it’s not a horrible compromise.
If you have the money, why compromise? SD weather > SF. NY cultural scene > SF.an
Participant
SF also seems to have a lot of damn smart people, better (the best?) tech scene, more cultural events, and location on the edge of an urban zone if you head north.
Cultural events? Again, if I want cultural event, I would go to the capital (The big apple). You mean a lot of damn rich tech guys/gals? With regards to tech scene, it depends. For the most part, I agree. However, if you’re talking about Bio-tech, SD is still way ahead.

Participant
East Village = no decent public transport, and it feels like most of SD with exception of maybe PB is deadsky after 9 pm. SF is more of a late-night town, though nothing compared to Manhattan or Brooklyn.
uh, what are you talking about: http://goo.gl/maps/DESbi. See the thing in the middle of the map? It looks like it says Metro Transit center. What does being a late-night town anything to do with anything? If I want a late night town, I wouldn’t go 1/2 way to SF. I’d go all the way to Manhattan. What would something like this cost in SF: http://www.sdlookup.com/MLS-120043430-700_W_E_St_4001_San_Diego_CA_92101? 40th floor with that kind of view?
an
ParticipantAny in areas comparable to Gaslamp and 920 sq-ft? I see one in SOMA for $2k, you can share a 1000 sq-ft 2/2. http://sfbay.craigslist.org/sfc/apa/3384865355.html So, for 1000 sq-ft in SOMA, your total cost is around $4k. Again, I think Gaslamp > SOMA. SOMA feels more like East village to me. Stuff are cheaper in East village than Gaslamp.
BTW, what would something like this cost in SF: http://www.sdlookup.com/MLS-120049503-700_Front_St_2302_San_Diego_CA_92101?

Participantspdrun, you really fail to see the point. My response was ctr70, who was trying to compare Clairemont to SF. Someone who have enough money to buy investment properties with cap rate of 7-8% and have enough income from those investment properties to live in SF would not be consider Clairemont. That’s the point. Trying to say SD is crappy and SF is great because of area like Clairemont is retarded.
SOMA is not the greatest part of SF, yet for $1950, you can rent a 275 sq-ft studio. If you really want to compare apple to apple, you can compare that studio in SOMA to this: http://sandiego.craigslist.org/csd/apa/3380888812.html. I would say Gaslamp area is > SOMA, 940 sq-ft > 275 sq-ft, etc.

Tell me, what does $400k get you in SF?
No point in buying for $400k in SF. Rent, exploit the ridic. landlord-tenant laws, and buy a few rentals across the bay or in points south to fund your rent.
What can you rent for $1800-2000 in SF? Have you tried raising a family of 4 in a 275 sq-ft studio? http://sfbay.craigslist.org/sfc/apa/3384380519.htmlan
Participant
And SF has breathtaking views in every direction :=] There is no place like it on earth.
There are many areas that have just as breathtaking views as SF. SD have a few places that have views just as good as SF and the weather is better. Some are actually much better. SF view ain’t nothing special. I’d say views in Bora bora is 110x better than SF’s view.an
ParticipantTell me, what does $400k get you in SF? Why are you comparing SF to claremont? Why not compare SF to RSF, DT, DT la jolla, etc.
