ParticipantIn my experience the portable AC units without intake are pretty much useless:
1. They exhaust tremendous amounts of inside air, therefore they suck in tremendous amounts of hot outside air. This more than offsets any cooling effect.
2. The exhaust hose radiates a substantial amount of heat, even if you insulate it yourself.

The building codes in effect during the ’80s weren’t so great from a seismic safety perspective. In addition to the inspections you should probably budget for seismic retrofitting.

ParticipantAgreed joec … it can go too far … I think of the South Korean auto industry in the 1990s, with government sponsorship getting to the point where a small nation of 40 million had five auto manufacturers.
But yeah as jimmyle notes, the rest of the world isn’t standing still ๐
