ParticipantComposite hockey sticks break at rates far higher than their wooden counterparts specifically because of the nick/dent weakness of composite. With all the stick-on-stick hacking and slashing that goes on, it seems that there’s a snapped stick on the ice every 10 minutes. They cost 10 times as much and break 10 times as often.
But holy shit do they deliver a wicked slapshot.
As with everything in life, there are tradeoffs.

ParticipantSpeaking of Millenials, a good article:
http://www.nytimes.com/2011/11/13/opinion/sunday/the-entrepreneurial-generation.html
All this is why, unlike those of previous youth cultures, the hipster ethos contains no element of rebellion, rejection or dissent — remarkably so, given that countercultural opposition would seem to be essential to the very idea of youth culture. That may in turn be why the hipster has proved to be so durable. The heyday of the hippies lasted for all of about two years. The punks and slackers held the stage for little more than half a decade each. That’s the nature of rebellion: it needs to keep on happening. The punks rejected the mainstream, but they also rejected the previous rejection, hippiedom itself — which, by the late ’70s, was something that old people (i.e. 28-year-olds) were into. But hipsters, who’ve been around for 15 years or so, appear to have become a durable part of our cultural configuration.
Or maybe not. These movements always have an economic substrate. The beatniks and hippies — love, ecstasy, transcendence, utopia — were products of the postwar boom. The punks and slackers and devotees of hip-hop — rage, angst, nihilism, withdrawal — arose within the long stagnation that lasted from the early ’70s to the early ’90s. The hipsters were born in the dot-com boom and flourished in the real estate bubble.
Affability is a commercial virtue, but it is also the affect of people who feel themselves to be living in a fundamentally agreeable society. Already, the makings of a new youth culture may be locking into place.

Participant
It has been the default currency almost every time the others have failed because it is small and easy to carry and transfer between people.
Actually, gold has been historically used as currency not because it is “small and easy to carry” but because of chemistry. Iron and Helium are small and easy to carry, but we don’t use those. Most elements on the periodic table are unsuitable because they are gasses, reactive (Sodium blows up when wet, Iron rusts), radioactive (your money would slowly disappear and you would die from it.. lets call it “radioactive deflation”), too rare (Irridium, Rhenium), or undiscovered in the ancient world (Palladium, Rhodium, Platinum). That leaves us with Silver and Gold. Silver of course tarnishes, so Gold wins by default. There can be no physical currency besides Gold… chemistry demands it!
SCIENCE!

ParticipantSeconding Backblaze. They’ve been nothing short of amazing. Cheap. And their recent update with auto-throttling really improved things. I used to notice when it was running because my internet would slow down, but not any more. Now it’s almost invisible, you don’t even notice it’s there. I have a massive media library, with nearly a terabyte (that’s over a thousand gigs for the non-techies out there) of data backed up with Backblaze for $10/month ($5 for each of my wife’s and my own computers). And it’s unlimited so I could back up another terabyte of data for the same price if I needed to.
I have tested file recovery with them and it’s a breeze and worked as expected. Luckily I haven’t had to do a full restore yet, but I like the option of paying to have them ship you an entire drive with all your files on it.
Another benefit is their “Locate My Computer” tool. Works similar to iOS’ “Locate my iPhone/iPad/MacBook”. Basically, if someone steals your computer, Backblaze is still running in the background and you can use it to locate your lost/stolen computer. They have a story on their blog where a theif was taking pictures of himself with the built-in webcam, and the pictures were being uploaded to Backblaze without his knowledge. The owner could see the files being uploaded to Backblaze, which gave him plenty of evidence to take to the police to catch the guy and get his computer back.
The only bummer, but it’s true of all cloud backups, is that it took literally a month running 24/7 to complete my initial backup of 600+ gigs. Once the initial backup was complete though, the incrementals are minor, quick, and hardly noticeable.
Note that I use Backblaze as a backup to my backup. My primary backup is still a local external drive using Time Machine. That’s always been enough when I’ve needed to restore an older file revision or rebuild a file-system (which I’ve had to do more than once). Time Machine has been more than enough. But it’s obviously not enough if the house burns down or I get robbed, which is why Backblaze gives me the piece of mind I need.

Participant
That’s la fuente.
Not la posta.
Shit you’re right. That is a mortal error. I’m disappointed in myself and have let my adopted race down. All these damn Mexicans and their restaurants and their La’s and El’s and rolled R’s and eñe’s, can’t keep them straight.
I can’t vouch for La Posta’s tranny brawls, but have experienced some enjoyable pan handling action there in the past. General rule: La Fuente = beans & tranny brawls, La Posta = asada, Los Panchos = meh, Rigobertos = that place in that movie “A Day Without A Mexican.”
But the general point still stands: you can’t beat a drunken 3AM trip to a Hillcrest taco shop.

Participant
(if you can remember to avoid La Posta at 3am on Saturday night).
Why avoid La Posta at 3am when you can witness some of the best tranny brawls Mexican joints can offer?
I specifically go to La Posta at 3am just for that reason. That, and their beans.

ParticipantI’d cut the cord if I could get my LA Kings games without cable. I looked into NHL Gamecenter (it was just added in the latest AppleTV update) and the streaming samples I tried looked great. I could watch every game in the league all year for $150, which is less than a single month of paying for cable. But of course there is a catch. Gamecenter only plays out-of-market games. Being in the LA Kings market, all of their games would be blacked out! What the fuck’s the point then? I suppose it’s great if you live in a different city than your favorite team, but if you’re local and looking to cut the cord without losing live sports, forget about it.
There are so many entrenched interests in the cable/movie/music/media industries that it’s going to be many years before we can fully cut the cord, if ever. It’s looking like they’re going to slowly bleed us dry with shitty options until they can figure out a way to continue making money in the new world. They’re going down kicking and screaming the entire way.

ParticipantYes, I’d buy that house. Whatever has happened there in the past has no bearing on what may happen there in the future. However, if it used to be occupied by a unicorn or the Easter Bunny, that’d be a completely different story, because I actually believe in those.
