ParticipantRecently CalTrans has been trying out new ways of shaving the surface of highways to minimize noise. I’m pretty sure that’s what they’ve been doing these past couple months along the 5 in North Country. Looks like the concrete has been shaved clean, and it feels like a smoother ride. Not sure how much it helps with noise though.
You can find lots of material/studies on it here: http://www.dot.ca.gov/hq/esc/Translab/ope/QuieterPavements.html

ParticipantI rent literally 8 houses from that Hayes house, and it’s definitely University Heights. But damn, that’s a sweet deal. I love this little pocket of homes off Johnson Ave.
I also lived literally 2 lots down from that Van Buren house for many years. It is a mansion surrounded by apartments and bungalow homes. I remember it being listed in the nearly 2-mil range a couple years ago. Insane that it dropped all the way down to 900k. Or maybe just insane that it was once listed for almost 2 mil, depending on how you look at it.

ParticipantHere’s an awesome interactive chart that visually breaks down every part of the budget: http://www.nytimes.com/packages/html/newsgraphics/2011/0119-budget/index.html. Make sure you zoom all the way into the tiny shit that everybody wants to cut but won’t make much of an impact.
