I’ve only ever taken the Catalina Express from Dana Point: http://www.catalinaexpress.com/

I agree with 4plex that it’s a quick escape — not much to do there. But it’s got a natural beauty and some history to it that makes it an interesting weekend trip. It’s something “different” than most SoCal adventures. To be honest, it felt like a sloooooowww retirement community to me, but sometimes that’s the point. The submarine boat trip around the kelp forests and garibaldi made the whole trip worth it for me — like scuba diving without having to get wet.

Ladies always seem to enjoy the quick jaunt to Catalina, but the kids may find it a bit boring. Take them on the submarine boat, it’s pretty neat. Just make sure you purchase some ‘fishfood torpedos’
