France averages $0.1939/kWh. If you use like an average French person, your cost is $0.17/kWh. So, no, France doesn’t have cheaper electricity than SoCal.
Average residential electric cost in SoCal is quoted as 22-23 cents per kWh. Where are you getting 17 cents?

Funny, that’s what Alcatel (Enterprise) said too…Until the chinese bought them…too… I guess that’s what happens when your cost structures goes totally out of wack, that your company is no longer competitive and starts losing market share and customers….
December 3, 2014 at 6:50 PM #780663spdrunParticipantCompanies are bought and sold all of the time. Dumberican working hours and vacation time didn’t save IBM’s PC business from going to the Chinese either.

Well, I think it had a lot less to do with american working hours and more to do with american company’s bloated cost structure too, although much lesser extent than our european counterparts.

I don’t want a vibrant, commercial society. I want a slow leisure society where people have more time to drink, think, and fuck than to work for some asshole who deserves nothing better than a punch in the nose.[/quote]Misery loves company but happiness also wants company.
It’s your personal choice to take it slow, enjoy and be happy. You can do it, but the rest of the world won’t partake.
In a real meritocracy (as we discussed with education earlier) you’re not allowed to not be your best and still remain in the game (unless you have extraordinary abilities and can best the competition while only operating at 70%). If you don’t have what it takes, you may have to watch from afar. Be OK with that.
The bar is always being raised and it’s up you to keep up, or not. You may like to hang out at cafes in Prague, travel here and there and enjoy life. But the guys who have no choice but to hang out at cafes would love to work their asses off in Silicon Valley to afford that SUV.
You think like you do because you already know what it’s like to own that SUV. But other people do desire those materials and they will work hard to afford them.
If you read the opinion pages of Europe, there is real anxiety about the world passing them by. Same goes for Japan with rising Korea and China. If they were truly happy, they would just rest on their laurels and not worry.
December 3, 2014 at 8:03 PM #780666spdrunParticipantI’ve never owned a fucking SUV and if someone gave me one, I’d part it out with a chain saw and send them pictures.
Then take a trip to Prague on the money gained from EBay sales while laughing all the way.
And don’t confuse editorials in op-ed pages with the feelings of the average employee in a given country. People who I know in northern Europe are quite grateful NOT to be Americans.
December 3, 2014 at 8:40 PM #780667FlyerInHiGuestYou’ve never owned an SUV but you live here, so you know the culture. Americans think it’s a standard must have. People in other countries view the SUV as an upperclass luxury.
Just find your own way and don’t worry about people joining the ride.
On a personal level, I agree with you. But I don’t think it’s wise to formulate policies based on what we personally want. It has to work for the whole and based on external factors.
The European model worked during the 20th century. In a global economy, it becomes untenable.
BTW the US ranks pretty high on the happiness index.
And the Czech Republic is not a good model of prosperity and happiness. The porn and sex industry is thriving there because young people will do anything to afford an iPhone. (Not that I watch. Yeah right!)
December 3, 2014 at 8:53 PM #780668spdrunParticipantIt’s not only Europe. People in most well-run developed countries work less than people in the US. And they sure don’t fucking brag about working five years without time off like it’s some sort of badge of honor versus a sign of being an exploited sheep.
The sex industry exists and is thriving everywhere. At least the Germans and the Czechs have the decency to regulate and allow it, rather than making it the underground domain of violent pimps and crank skanks, where sex workers are afraid to seek the help of the police if something goes wrong.

Judging from the increasing prevalence of expletives in your posts, this doesn’t seem to be the happiest time of year for you, spdrun. I thought being European came with a guaranty of being happy. None of the Americans on this board seem to be as angry as you. Maybe you need some good American made pharmaceuticals ;).
December 3, 2014 at 9:42 PM #780670spdrunParticipantSadly, I had the great misfortune of being born in the US. Fortunately, I’m a dual citizen so this will be corrected next year.
I don’t need drugs. I need a one-way plane ticket, an apartment lease in Berlin or Prague for a half year. Every day spent outside of the US is like a breath of fresh air.
Most Americans have never stuck their noses outside of North America — only something like 35% even hold passports, so they don’t know what they’re missing being stuck here.
December 3, 2014 at 9:42 PM #780671FlyerInHiGuestIgnorance is bliss.
I was told by reliable sources that, in Prague, sex workers come pretty cheap, under $50 and negotiable, for a young goodlooking (maybe not “hot”) escort. I know a shopkeeper in Prague who regularly enjoys their company in his apartment above the store.
What do they spend the money on? iPhones and American brands, or world renowned brands. My point is that consumerism is rampant. It’s not like Europeans are wholesome happiness seeking people. They are very much like us. They would consume a lot more if they could.
I would concede that they are not “just like us”. They are more philosophical. But that can lead to less happiness, not more (as in the case of the French).
December 3, 2014 at 9:43 PM #780672spdrunParticipantThey would consume a lot more if they could.
Ah. But not at the expense of working like Americans. Witness the near riots whenever someone tries to institute American-type labor “reforms.”

They can’t even if they wanted to. Just look at their unemployment.December 3, 2014 at 9:57 PM #780675scaredyclassicParticipanti am extremely happy today. me and my kids left early to go eat at panda express, which was inexplicably really fun, then it was raining, and i wanted a beanie hat, because i had one since 2002 that went missing this year, where is it I don’t know, it says salt lake city olympics 2002 and i got it off a cheerios box and i was hoping to keep wearing it till 2052, but its gone, so we darted across the parking lot to ross dress for less, an objectively depressing place, but it wasn’t! and got a cheap beanie, 7.99, and it is awesome but it doesnt have a date on it, but still, nice, but mainly we were having a really good time goofing around int he store, laughing at dumb things like size 14 shoes and a steelers cap and wallets and nothing…….and then we went to sprouts and bought salami and beer and some other lunch foods, and it was, well, really fun. like, super fun. like being on vacation fun for some reason. i apid for everything with this giant sack of change i am carrying around. and it was totally goofy….
people in america can have fun. it is possible
