I must have a pretty “vociferous” group of boomers in my little “microcosm” just nine miles from the Int’l border, lol …
Look further East to the McMansions of Chula Vista. Lots of Mexican dual citizens who paid cash for their houses. They go back and forth and have business in Mexico. They don’t appreciate Trump saying Mexico will pay for the wall.
This group likely won’t even have an opinion on that. They’re not the part of the illegal or temp work visa group working in the CA ag industry who is sending home regular “remittances” to their families back in MX that Trump proposes to block if MX refuses to pay for a wall. The CV (and Bonita) “well-heeled group” can come and go freely across the border as they please and so can all their family members. There is no need for members of this group to send regular “remittances” to MX banks.

This is the ultimate bullshit excuse people make. The loudest complainers of h1-b’s are also the ones complaining the loudest about illegal aliens.
When the hell is someone who is looking for a job cross shopping between a high paid tech job and a low skilled low pay day labor job? People are just pissed and want to an explanation of why they are falling short.
OK fine, take away all the foreign students… Let’s drop affirmative action and reverse quotas and let things be completely based on merit for all us citizens. If that means 60%+ of top rank med school and engineering schools end up being Indians and Asians with u.s. citizenship, so be it. You really think Trump support ers would be OK with that? Nope. Of course not. You know what Trump supporters really want? Crudely said, affirmative action for non colored people who can’t get on based on merit by quota limiting anyone else that does better.
Not sure that the bullshit excuse is. But pretty much agree with you here.
“Trumpeters” (let’s call them that for lack of a better word) are tribal, nativist folks who don’t have really have the moral high ground.
I have also said that conservative would see their policies come back and bite them in the ass.
Flu, here’s a word that expresses exactly what you said above:
Ressentiment (French pronunciation: [rəsɑ̃timɑ̃]), in philosophy and psychology, is one of the forms of resentment or hostility. It is the French word for “resentment” (fr. Latin intensive prefix ‘re’, and ‘sentir’ “to feel”). Ressentiment is a sense of hostility directed at that which one identifies as the cause of one’s frustration, that is, an assignment of blame for one’s frustration. The sense of weakness or inferiority and perhaps jealousy in the face of the “cause” generates a rejecting/justifying value system, or morality, which attacks or denies the perceived source of one’s frustration. This value system is then used as a means of justifying one’s own weaknesses by identifying the source of envy as objectively inferior, serving as a defense mechanism that prevents the resentful individual from addressing and overcoming their insecurities and flaws. The ego creates an enemy in order to insulate itself from culpability.

I have not heard Trump say that the would seize remittances lately.
He implies however that we have trade deficits with Mexico and China and we will somehow not pay them unless they do what we want. And according to Trump, they will be “thrilled” to submit.

That is his “leverage” with MX, among other things. He also proposed that MX be compelled to send the US a list of their felons so we can vet them at the time of their application for a visa.
He doesn’t plan for the US to “seize” the remittances. Trump proposes to prohibit US banks from processing them. Not sure about his plans for prohibiting the mailing of money orders. MO’s represent over half or more of all the remittances regularly sent to MX.
February 25, 2016 at 1:36 PM #794951FlyerInHiGuestOn immigration, Trump is painting Republicans into a corner. Even if he’s elected, he won’t fulfill his supporters’ wishes and that will create even more resentment.
Jeb is correct on immigration, although he had to move to the right during the campaign.
https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/post-politics/wp/2013/06/14/jeb-bush-u-s-economy-needs-immigrants-because-theyre-more-fertile/Basically, immigrants are more productive and hardworking. We need more of them.

He’s too stingy, and not as rich as he says, to build an organization. . .
Umm, FIH? As a matter of public record, Trump is a “billionaire.”
2016 Presidential candidates’ net worth: Donald Trump vs. Bernie Sanders and more
He has plenty of money to “build an organization” and likely already has one in the works.
Trump knows plenty of influential people and, as you know, recently refused a $1M campaign donation from Phil Ruffin, owner of the Treasure Island Resort and Casino.
If the rest of the Republican candidates end up dropping like flies one by one because they can’t catch up with Trump, the “Republican establishment” will have no choice but to get behind Trump. The next few weeks will tell the tale.
February 25, 2016 at 1:52 PM #794954no_such_realityParticipantI don’t know Trumps popularity, I often suspect it’s much like the Germans thrall with Hitler in the 30s. Some probably are as flu asserts, most I suspect just feel a generalized resentment.
I won’t debate the merits of H1bs, used as intended and implied it’s beneficial, personally, I’ve seen it misused far more than used appropriately.. Both illegal immigration, and it’s real, problem counterpart, illegal labor, and H1bs both, IMHO, result in a degradation of our employee quality of life as they’re being utilized today. Not because of the people but because of the exploitive business practices.
BG often asserts that Americans won’t do the meat packing jobs many illegals are doing. She’s probably right, IMHO the reality is cwe shouldn’t be expecting illegals or anybody to work in those conditions.
The voter resentment, I suspect, can’t put that into words, but they see and feel the impacts regularly even while reaping the benefits, low cost meat. They’re anger, IMHO, is misplaced at the H1bs or illegals and instead should be directed at the companies and politicians gaming the system, reaping mass profits while exploiting everything at their expense.
February 25, 2016 at 2:42 PM #794956The-ShovelerParticipantI probably got it wrong but I really don’t think immigration etc.. is the main issue.
I think it’s more just a protest vote that is sending a very clear message that seems to be falling on deaf ears.
No we don’t want to be far-far right, we really want to
be in the center. But Like I said I probably got it wrong.
February 25, 2016 at 2:43 PM #794957bearishgurlParticipantWhether Protestant or Catholic, there are a LOT of “evangelicals” and very conservative Christians as well as a large Mormon population in South County SD. This is more in the Republicans’ favor than the dems, I would think. We’ll see how the voter registrations, precinct by precinct wash out by June. It’s going to be an interesting election year, to say the least :=0

Trump is full of hot air.
Celebrity and resentment is what is winning now.
The reason that Trump lost in Iowa is because he didn’t have an organization on the ground (which as you know takes years and an establishment to build).
Trump has been very stingy with spending money on the campaign trail… I don’t think that has that much money (relative to the billionaire class). If he wins the nomination, the will have to release this tax returns and other filings and we will see more into his wealth.
Phil Ruffin owns the Trump tower in Vegas. It is Phil Ruffin’s land that it’s built on. I think the $1 million contribution that Trump “declined” is just made for TV.
Like I said, we will see if the Republican establishment backs Trump. I’m loving this because I believe that the Republican party is self destructing. Let’s watch the reality show. That’s what makes life interesting.

That’s very well put.
But that requires that working class Whites “lower” themselves and work in solidarity the other lower classes “we are all in it together so let’s support policies that improve wages and working conditions for everyone.”
Psychologically, it’s easier for working class, low education Whites to believe that they are the “hard working” and “deserving” ones. It helps them avoid looking in the mirror. Essentially, “The ego creates an enemy in order to insulate itself from culpability.” (the culpability here is voting for the wrong policies all along).

I believe that in another decade, the evangelical mask will come off. Talking about the emperor having no clothes, that’s pretty much evangelicals. Their lives are no more righteous. Eventually, they will have to confront the facts that despite their Christian fundamentalism, their lives are just as fvucked up, or even more so than the general population(substance abuse, divorce, teenage pregnancy, tooth count, education, etc.. ).
I suspect that Sarah Palin, if she’s a good self-promoter, will eventually switch and become a liberal anti-war, anti-gun supporter of gay marriage.

He’s not a “career politician.” Acc to Ruffin, he actually sent the Trump campaign a check and Trump had it sent back to him. They’re “old friends.”

I don’t think Trump cares what happens to the Republican Party. He would have ran on an independent ticket if he thought he could be as successful in his campaign.
Yeah, I DO believe he says a lot of things just to keep the attention on his campaign. But I don’t think that’s who is really is. A lot of stuff that comes out of his mouth (that doesn’t have anything to do with his stance on the issues) is just for effect (such as the comments he makes about protestors on his campaign trail). The general public is used to “sensationalism” coming from his camp because he was a “reality TV” celebrity. He is a master at manipulating the MSM and it seems to work for him.
Four or eight years from now, when we are in another election cycle, voters aren’t going to care or remember what went on in the POTUS campaigns of 2016. It will be biz as usual and of course, the Republican Party will still be there. The general public has a short attention span.
February 25, 2016 at 4:03 PM #794963FlyerInHiGuestBG, if Phil Ruffin sent a $1 million check, Trump had to return it because there are limits to direct contributions. Look it up.
Contributors are responsible to make sure they comply. Ruffin has lawyers and he’s not dumb.It was a stunt made for TV so Trump can claim independence from big money, and you fell for it.
