time is money though. are dealers making firm offers via email nowadays? can preliminary negotiations be done via email ?
costco?
truecar
carwoo?
Yes.. Not only preliminary negotiations. I had the sales guy ended up sending me the out the door price prior to showing up in L.A…It’s not specifically one brand, and not specifically with dealers in L.A. I mean, if you’re really daring, there were a few dealers in arizona that was willing to deal with me…I’ve done this with a c320 in 2002, an MDX in 2004, an x5 in 2011 and the 550 in 2012. For me, there was a $1500 price difference on the c320 between L.A. and San Diego, there was a $1500 price difference on the MDX (might have been more, i forget), there was $2100 on the x5 and a $3700( or something like that) price difference on the 550 if I recall.
The big difference between S.D. and L.A. there are a lot more L.A. dealers, a lot more inventory.
They are willing to move the vehicles off the lot a lot faster for a lot less..In a lot of L.A. places, they’ll sell at or below invoice, because they want to get rid of the car as soon as it comes in so they can keep as much of their holdback allowances as possible. That’s why it’s sort of important to know how long the car has been sitting on the lot. If a car just came in, and if the brand has a bunch of holdback allowances from factory to dealer, the dealer would probably let the car go much quicker at a cheaper price.
I found out that in general San Diego dealers are just too fvcking arrogant. I’ve approached dealers with L.A. pricing, and they basically told me, go there to get it, because we know we can sell our cars to some San Diegans who don’t want to travel up here and back. By far the most expensive dealers that weren’t willing to budge were the ones in Carlesbad. The ones that came closer to budging was in Temecula, but they still were off compared to L.A.
Ironically, there’s a lot more wiggle room on BMW’s then on some popular Japanese cars, specifically the honda accord. That’s why I ask are you sure?
Looking at edmunds, truecar, costco auto program, the closest that these websites came to my own negotiated price was truecar…. I consistently still beat truecar….
BTW: I’m assuming you aren’t financing.. My comparison was for car purchases that were not financed…The pricing is also different if you’re planning on financing with the stealership.
July 29, 2012 at 4:49 PM #749227CoronitaParticipantFound the post(s). Substitute “someone” for me. As in the past I often referred to “someone” as me, don’t know why (guess I have a personality disorder).
Too bad you don’t know me in person and you’re kinda in a hurry scardey… Otherwise I’d be happy to give stealers shit…I’m kinda busy this month dealing with my customers.

July 29, 2012 at 5:28 PM #749229ocrenterParticipantIn regard to LA vs SD, completely agree with FLU.
My lastest purchase, a used 2011 MB GLK, purchased for $28k from an LA dealership. The exact car in SD started at $32k.
We also negotiated the deal prior to the drive up by phone.
July 30, 2012 at 7:11 AM #749244scaredyclassicParticipantwow. car sales is different nowadays.
requested a quote on carwoo last night.
early this morning dealer quoted 18,000 on a 23,000 sticker priced new 2012 accord. That discount is greater than that generally said to be a good deal on truecar.com.
you have the ability to make counteroffers directly on carwoo.
was a lot lower than the costco price i also asked for last night (about 20,000 same car).
not sure it’ll get much lower than that. seems cheaper than I anticipated. Still need to verify the out the door price.
I see ads for used Hondas that are similar or greater in price.
I see in the paper there are very cheap leasing deals on Hondas as part of a summer sales event. probably it’s an ok time to buy a honda.

Honda clearance event…Also, if I recall the Accord is due for a makeover in MY 2013…Not sure if you care…
July 30, 2012 at 7:53 AM #749249scaredyclassicParticipantAlso, at 2.5% for 66 month financing thru a credit union, not sure financing can get too much cheaper…
July 30, 2012 at 7:57 AM #749250spdrunParticipantThose rates also apply for used cars, though. I often get 2yr/2% balance transfer offers up to $10k or so. PayPal a private seller a payment for a used car using one card. Pay it off using the 2% deal, and use that card for NOTHING ELSE, being very careful to make payments well in advance.
July 30, 2012 at 8:00 AM #749251scaredyclassicParticipantthere was a wonder years episode we watched recently where Kevin’s dad was having a really hard time letting an old car go. i could relate. i have a lot of unresolved feelings. Maybe I need some therapy on this transaction.
If I kept this new car as long as I had my last car (24 years), I’d be older than my dad when he died…which means…this is probably the last car I’d ever buy…
July 30, 2012 at 8:04 AM #749252scaredyclassicParticipanti think this was the book i read back in 1988. my friends thought it was hilarious. they said i’d ditch the car in 3 years.

July 30, 2012 at 8:11 AM #749255spdrunParticipantWowsers! A redesign that’s not fuglier than the outgoing model!
This being said, the high beltline and small side windows of almost all modern cars still make me want to hawk a loogie in Ralph Nader’s face.

Scardey, you should be getting a quote closer to invoice versus MSRP. (it’s not uncommon to get $1000+ below invoice on a Honda ). Also, check out the Edmund’s blogs. People will tell you on the blogs what they are seeing out the door recently.
You might do even better in L.A. if you take carwoo’s price and ask an L.A. dealer to beat…They usually are pretty competitive and desperate.
Make sure you get the complete options list of the quoted car. Because you want to compare the percentage discounts off cars. Every car is slightly off in terms of equipment package. And rather than trying to find the same car with same equipment package, you might as well be flexible and settle for either slightly less or slightly more.
Lastly, the Accord is due for a makeover in MY 2013…So there might be even more room to negotiate. I don’t know if you would care or not, but once the 2013 comes out the 2012 will definitely be discounted since the 2013 appears to be a redesign.

Yes scardey, it is possible you can buy a new accord that costs less than a used/certified accord. The difference is on the equipment package and sometimes just how the pricing works. There might be a special factory to dealer incentive to clear a model, like there is now. A lot of cars that are leased/lease returns are fully loaded, which makes up a bulk of the preowned cars….You end up with options that you might not have ever wanted on a preowned. The car you might be picking up new probably has much less options, but then again a lot of people (me included) don’t care to a point. If you don’t mind having less options, new is the way to go imho. If you car about the bells and whistles and want the same price points, well then I guess for some certified/used would be better. And why I don’t understand folks with the blanket statement that say always buy used. It makes sense in some cases. Other times it doesn’t.
Still want to sink $ into that civic dx or fvck with a stripped drain plug? 🙂 Not worth it imho.
July 30, 2012 at 8:18 AM #749256CoronitaParticipantscardey. Last thing about the car loan. Check with your auto insurance. Not sure, but if I recall I thought insurance slightly charged more if you had a loan on the car. But maybe I’m wrong. (Don’t know).
July 30, 2012 at 11:29 AM #749263Diego MamaniParticipant
i went out and test drove an accord this morning with my wife. i got a free $25.00 visa card for doing it. the salesman looked kinda young which means im old. and i was driving a car that my wife said looked like only an old person would buy. we looked at the available colors and she said, “old people colors”.
She said i looked old walking around peering in the windows.
So how do i get the best deal on these things?
Best deal? Perhaps joining some sort of association for old people will get you some discounts…
