You’re right, Malibu/Camry/Accord should be compared to 3-series/A4/C-class. They’re totally different cars for different purposes.

The Mercury Mariner is a entry level luxury CUV, same with the RX300. Neither one of them are sporty. The RX300 is as far from sporty as you can get. It rides very smooth though.

People don’t have to make excuses for their purchase. They bought a certain vehicle because that vehicle fits their criterias. Reputation for reliability is one of them, same with past experiences. I know people who would only buy Camry because their past Camry hold up very well. I also know someone who would only buy a Dodge Caravan because their past experiences said it’s a great car, although it doesn’t do too well in comparison tests.

It took Hyundai over 10 years to shed their image of cheap cars. You can’t expect GM to change people’s perception of them over night. Face it, it’s a long hard fight to get back the customers they lost. They have to release great products after great products to win back their customers. There’s no free lunch here. Ford seems to get it w/ their new products, that’s why they’re not asking for a bail out.
