Yeah they’re not exclusive. Didn’t mean to imply that. I suppose you could even have a policy of being hedonistic only odd numbered days and charitable the rest of the time. Could you truly be charitable and hedonistic at the same time? Not sure.
I still don’t agree with this last of yours:
“it’s only my perception of it that really matters. Because when I die, I won’t perceive anything.”Your works can outlive you. I agree they won’t matter to *you* (religious predictions aside), but they still could matter to others.
I didn’t know any Stevie Ray Vaughan tunes until he was already dead (unfortunately). They may not matter to *him* anymore, but they do to me…
Children and grandchildren of course are obvious examples of “works” that will likely outlive you.

OK fine. You don’t like the heroin idea I take it. My sister-in-law could totally set you up, if you do. She’s been feeling excellent for nearly twenty years now.
Drugs have no appeal to me whatsoever. Generically, drug addicts are unhappy with their existences and seek to escape reality through artificial means. I quite enjoy my real life and have no interest in “escaping” it.
I’ve never had an illegal drug, including pot, although I support the legalization of all drugs. I didn’t start drinking until I was 34, and do occasionally like to have a few beers. I’ve never been shitfaced. But getting a moderate buzz going in the presence of entertaining company is one of life’s pleasures. Moderation in all things. Including moderation.
But if it’s pleasure you’re after (because life has no point), it’s all just a matter of brain chemistry. Whether you have an abundance of dopamine and norepinephrine provided by drugs or by a few beers and “entertaining” company, it’s all essentially the same.
