I find this a typical response:
“Get the best of both worlds and make some money out of your landlords misfortune”
As a renter that is know way to live, especially if you have a family, move. Not worth the hassle
to try and game the system. I have moved 4 times in 5 years, each time I have been better off and much happier.February 13, 2010 at 3:53 PM #513452desmondParticipantI find this a typical response:

The landlord (a contractor) was just by to fix smething last week, so I don’t think he’s abandoning us (that could change, of course). From what I understand, we are entitled to stay here for the full duration of our 18 month lease.

The landlord is trying to claim this house as his primary residence so he never changed his mailing address, which is how we ended up finding out about this. We never did pay a deposit(probably because the landlord knew this was going to happen). If we were going to ask for a reduction in our rent- how much should we ask for? What should we do if he won’t work with us?[/quote]
If it were me I would ask for 5-10% in reduction (of course depending on the market) and I would ask for a longer lease (since its much easier for a tenant to break than a landlord).
Broach the subject before reviewing the nuclear option.
