Taking a break to start my own business

I’m taking a break to start a consulting business, focusing on the San Diego economy, mainly real estate, jobs, education, investing.

I’ll keep checking in now and then, but cannot respond to all the interesting comments arising from the posts I’ve started.

So please don’t think I am being rude in not responding to your excellent counterpoints or questions. Today, I spent 6 hours on posting, and I just don’t have the time to keep up with it all; the forum has really grown thanks to Rich’s wonderful vision and work, so it takes a lot more time for someone like me who feels compelled to respond to every thread.

Well, enjoy my absence, I’m sure it will be a delight to some 🙂

I do think you’ve hit the glass ceiling of message board posting.. you’re very confident in your views and that with responsible research can probably earn you some money if you promote yourself effectively.

First off, I enjoy many of the topics you post, Powayseller. However, virtually all of your posts are basically regurgitations of other people’s research and thinking (which you credit, of course). This is fine, of course. These topics are still interesting more often than not. But I assume that if you’re going to start a consulting business that you are going to do your own original research – obviously, as otherwise it would have little to no value to paying customers. Consequently, I’m curious as to why so few of your topics have original research or thinking. I would expect this from the average forum participant (who is not an industry professional), but not from one that expects to build a presumably for-profit consulting business around his/her observations. Having said that I wish you the best of luck. Regarding consulting, after all, “If you’re not a part of the solution,there’s good money to be made in prolonging the problem.” (source: despair, inc.)

davelj, thanks for your comments. My commentary on news, analysis of other economists, and my projections for SD job growth and its effect on housing, both posted here, will continue, as will some charting, such as months inventory that I’ve been discussing (have been saving it for my own site). I will also continue the “regurgitating” of the excellent work done by others.

That said, is there anything about San Diego’s economy that people here are interested in?

I must say I think it will be great if you continue to post occasionally but not constantly. I think if you post fewer times, you will naturally weed out the redundant ones and put more thought into those you post, which is a good thing.

Somewhere, someone said maybe your calling was as a reporter, and I agree. I hope your pursuits bring you in that direction.

You are an important part of this forum so I’m glad to see you aren’t bailing altogether. We can now be “recovering Piggington Addicts” together.

I think your true calling may be as an attorney, though. I think if you were a courtroom litigator or prosecutor, you could wear someone out on the witness stand to the point they would become an emotional cripple.

Yes Powayseller!

I am very interested in getting to the bottom of what exactly is happeing with the job scene here. We have more job listings online than any other city in the U.S., but then there are stats out there pointing to job losses and a loss of 50,000 people last year. We hear about all of the highly paid overseas engineers coming here, but then we see that Nokia laid off 600+ a few weeks ago. And the general consensus always semms to be that San Diego is a low wage city. Very conflicting info. Perhaps you can get to the bottom of it!
