We love our 1360-sq-ft 3-2 house for our family of 4. Plenty of space. And I do remember that when I was considering buying it some folks–on this board even ;)–were telling me it was way too small for us. I am so glad that we didn’t listen, and now are no longer beholden to a bank for a huge mortgage for a whole bunch of space that we didn’t really need!!! Nothing like living 10 mins from work.

It is but it isn’t a recent fad. I think it is kind of a hold over from our parents and Grandparents when thier thrith wouldn’t allow them to throw anything away because “they could use that again”.CE[/quote]
I hear you on this. My mother in law is the worst… she grew up in the depression, raised 6 kids and never drove a car… she’s the queen of “I can use that for something… just haven’t figured out what, yet.”. We really ride her to keep the granny flat free of clutter… She’s never met a cheap pie tin, or plastic cake holder that can’t be repurposed.
Her sister in law (hubby’s aunt) is even worse – goes to garage sales and pays money for trash and junk… (She drives so she can make special trips to get junk.) Their Jersey shore house is scary with all the years of accumulated crap.
I don’t know if it’s growing up in the depression, or if it’s growing up poor children of immigrants… but both sides of hubby’s family are like that.

Could we survive in a smaller house? Yeah, but miserbaly. We rented a 1600 sq ft townhome for two years. Would I trade a big yard and privacy from neighbours for more space inside? Definitely yes.
Now commuting time is a different beast. I would NOT want to drive > 45 min one way just to have a big house.
