ParticipantRustico, I knew that was coming. What can I say π
Actually, I found out the hard way – our minivan was supposed to get smog checked earlier this year and it didn’t pass. So I took it to our local dealer and they wanted to charge about $1400 to fix everything. They said I’d need: a valve replacement kit, an Intake Manifold (IMRC) kit and a tune-up. I took it back to the Precision Tune Auto Care and they did all the repairs for just under a $1000.
I had thought about just making greater than $450 in repairs and then taking the car to a Referee smog station to see if I could get the other $550 in repairs delayed for two years just to save some money. But my wife was tired of seeing the Check Engine light constantly on for the past year and a half – it never affected performance, at least not that we could tell. So I finally got that fixed. Oh yeah, we did drive around for a month or so with the number “4” on the windshield – that went over real well with my wife :)))

ParticipantNo worries Harry! I have been through so much of the same. We are very vulnerable to mechanics, when that stupid check engine light comes on.
I guess that all the money and human energy that has been wasted on check engine light related problems and the “smog check” system could have been successfully used to develope clean and renewable energy propelled transportion!

ParticipantOne of the greatest purchases I have ever made was of a cheap OBD II diagnostic computer at my local Pep Boys. Each time the light comes on Pacific Porsche wants to charge me $130 to diagnose what’s wrong and turn off the light. It is virtually always something minor. I paid $69 for the device, it typically takes about 60 seconds to figure out the problem and tun off the light. About every 6 months my car has a cylinder misfire, which is completely benign, but causes the check engine light to come on. I figure the little machine has saved me 4 trips in the past 2 years, and I haven’t spent a dime on the car aside from routine maintainance.
