Just be glad you guy’s don’t live in LA is all I can say.
As a worker, LA County can be a fine place to live if you live near your work (not fwy dependent). IMO, the reason the roads are so crowded there is because a lot of folks refuse to live near work. I’ve stayed overnight in a few homes in LA County and I thought the neighborhoods were awesome! Even walked to mom & pop stores after dark. How about large pier-and-post homes on larger-than-city-std lots. Many with large front porches. Alley access garages. Mature tree medians in street. Ex: Downey, Lakewood, Pasadena.
Heading northwest for larger ranch-style houses, I’m sure there are even good “cosmetic fixer” bargains in older “upscale” places like Bel-Air.
Just throwing a few (out of many) examples out there.
I HAVE ABSOLUTELY NO IDEA why someone would VOLUNTARILY CHOOSE to commute to LA, Orange or SD Co. to work from RIV or SB County. It’s absolutely mind-boggling and MAKES NO SENSE AT ALL . . . :={

$3/gallon:
10 miles each/day $40 total
90 miles each/day $360 total$5/gallon:
10 miles each/day $65 total
90 miles each/day $600 totalAt $5/gallon, that’s $500+ more than the SD commuter, plus the car depreciation which is negligible. Meanwhile we’re saving $1,500+/month over renting an equivalent place in SD, plus $200 in child care. We just couldn’t get past that math – the gas expense isn’t even an issue. It’s the time away from family that’s the hard choice.
If your income is substantial enough that $1,000-1,500 in savings every month isn’t a big deal, or the drive is unacceptable, then SD is a better choice for you.
Not everything has a dollar value — at 90 miles per day versus 10 miles per day, you are 9 times more likely to be in an automobile accident. And since much of that is on high-speed roads, if it occurs it is likely to be a doozy. Of course it will never happen to me because I am an excellent driver. And even if it does my Mercedes is of excellent quality and I will not be harmed.

August 19, 2010 at 12:02 PM #593300smshorttimerParticipantI doubt this would have happened, but …
I just want to pre-empt anybody by conceding that San Marcos has some of the most butt-ugly 70s-80s era tracts ever constructed. We looked at one place, which was the best of the lot aesthetically speaking, but the neighborhood was so architecturally foul that I had a hard time imagining just driving home to work each day. Was near a highly rated elementary school, though.
Also, my wife and I have opposite shifts, so promixity to our jobs was a big deal. (Her “commute” is less than half of mine.)
