August 30, 2021 at 12:02 PM #823049XBoxBoyParticipantThis thread has been great for me. When this thread was posted, I was tempted, but didn’t sell anything. (instead I have continued my steady dribble of savings into the stock market)
This thread has confirmed for me:
1) that I should never take advice from people on the internet
2) that I am not a speculator, that for me the only viable strategy is buy and hold.
3) I am not able to time the market, not even close.I need to see these sort of threads to be reminded of these things.

Agree x 10 with your agreement. Also I’ve learned:
The government can prop things up more than I thought possible. I thought they did a lot after the 2008 meltdown but that had almost no effect compared to what happened this time. Trillions can do that I guess.
And yes too soon.
August 31, 2021 at 6:42 AM #823060CoronitaParticipantYeah, well I was one of the people that actually took some money off to the side to be a little more cautious. But you know when I did that, it wasn’t significant enough to save my accounts when the markets declined…since when the markets declined the rest of my portfolio took a hit…at the same time, when the markets climbed fast, my portfolio didn’t climb as fast…Slow going up fastcoming down still…Story of my life….I should have just left things alone…
50-60% is impressive. I think my 1 year underperformed @ 27%
50-60% would have been nice. no early retirement for me…
August 31, 2021 at 7:51 AM #823061The-ShovelerParticipantI actually sold all stocks in February 2020 before the crash last year, but did not take advantage fully and buy in at bottom, ( I did go about 25% in at or near the bottom though), and the added anther 25% in a high dividend ETF later so probably got close to 50% (with market timing LOL, but it was mostly pure luck).

Im sure you did great. Part of that roughly 60% was leveraged real estate though it wasn’t highly leveraged. Someone highly leveraged on real estate would’ve done amazing also. I’m sure we know at least one or two of those also
August 31, 2021 at 8:24 AM #823063The-ShovelerParticipantI keep seeing article after article on yahoo saying “signs housing market is cooling”, then the next day I see another article that says “US home prices soar at record pace in June”
https://www.yahoo.com/news/us-home-prices-soar-record-130033292.html
August 31, 2021 at 9:11 AM #823064sdrealtorParticipantBoth true. Those prices are a few months back. Lately it has cooled but that just means a few offers instead of a dozen. I’ll update my monitors later but it looks like we will chug along through the end of the year with a solid but calmer market but come Spring all bets are off again
FWIW threads like this remind me how impatient people are and ignore how powerful the passage of time is. The older I get the more I learn it may be the most powerful force of all

Yep, the passage of time and the power of compound interest is HUGE.August 31, 2021 at 11:24 AM #823066The-ShovelerParticipantMemento mori,
The only problem I have with the passage of time LOL.
I keep hopping that issue gets solved.
But I kind of like Einstein’s block time where each instance in time exists eternally. so you kind of always existed/exist somewhere in block time.
August 31, 2021 at 11:44 AM #823067flyerParticipantSo true, TS.
Our wealth, however great or small, is only of value while we’re living, and to pass it along. No question it does make life on earth more pleasant, but, THE END is never far away. Keeps it all in perspective.
