I’m so tired of hearing that we need illegals to pick strawberries. You know what, I like strawberries but they are already overpriced as hell. Why not import them from Mexico for crying out loud? It would be much cheaper and the illegals could stay in their own country and work where they are more comfortable anyway. The only ones benefitting from the current system are the wealthy owners and corporatations. Am I sounding like Lou Dobbs? Good because Lou is awesome, it’s nice to hear some common sense on the TV once in a while.
May 20, 2007 at 3:46 PM #53970TheBreezeParticipantThe following quote comes from a Christian Science Monitor story:
‘To be eligible for this visa, applicants must have been “illegally present within the US before January 1, 2007.”‘
I wonder if that sub-quote is actual text from the bill. I’ve heard these Z visas discussed on TV, but it didn’t hit me how outrageous these things are until I read this actual text. So our Congresspeoples are prepared to give people permanent residency in the U.S. just because they managed to get here illegally? That is outrageous. I hope this bill meets a swift death.

May 20, 2007 at 9:37 PM #54008CoronitaParticipantBut I earned this money. I already paid taxes on this money. And I'll be damned if te government tells me what I can do with it upon my death. You have a very healthy sense of entitlement fat_lazy guy. No doubt you've been supporting yourself sincy you came out of the womb. You probably also never used a public highway and funded your very own personal police force and military. I bet you personally paid for private education while growing up also. Yep, no doubt you earned all that money and would have done just as well in the 1960's Soviet Union as you have done in the modern United States. In case you're not getting my point, every U.S. citizen benefits simply by being born in the U.S. The richest have benefitted the most and should pay the most in taxes. If you don't like the U.S. tax system, then renounce your citizenship and move someplace that will better respect your monies. I'm not about to shed a tear for the rich when the second-richest person in the United States pays a lower tax rate than his secretary.
Actually, I'm pretty happy with the way things are run here. It seems like it's all the folks that are disgruntled are the ones that bitch about how expensive everything is, how they want kick out the illegals, tax the upper income more…everything but instead of getting off their own lazy asses and earn more. Imho, those people should renounce their citzenship and get the hell out of here. Your secretary analogy versus the second-richest person…Maybe the secretary should figure out something better for his/her career? Maybe he/she should have taken their education more seriously instead of worshiping Britney Spears….The problem that I see, is that a lot of folks don't give a hoot about education or self improvement. When an education system fails, they blame the system, and not themselves. And when their stuck in a bad job that doesn't pay enough, they blame the system and not themselves. And/or they attempt to live well above their means..I've seen it all. They folks clearly not entitled to anything that I worked hard for.

it is utterly perverse the way some recent (and even not so recent) immigrants view the civil rights movement and “the blacks”. there’s racism written all over it and if you ask, they won’t deny it. (goes both ways, of course, the outrage of some blacks over the preferential treatment of new immigrants… justifiably.)
immigrants are not einsteins. they’re just like any other folk, they are going to be selfish, short sighted and ignorant. just like the majority of “native” americans. it is incredibly depressing to know that most everyone you see, hear, know and interact with is a moron.

one word. NAFTA. we bought it like a bag of magic beans, but it’s not the answer we were looking for.
not to mention… protective trade tariffs and farming subsidies…

no, that’s going too far and too fast. we have a social contract, to specialize our skills in order to live in an industrialized nation. we are no longer a nation of self supporting individuals. losing a job, losing your skills due to technology or innovation must have a guarantee that you will still be provided for. otherwise, the pace of technological advancement will insure a nation of unemployed or underemployed dissidents. that does not help the stability of the country.
capitalism *must* be tempered with socialism. otherwise, if you want pure capitalism… go to tj. there’s your rampant capitalism, there’s your cutthroat society. if you lose sympathy, desire for a middle class, you lose everything.
edit: oh, how could i miss the easy one, the gimme… this housing bubble that we are all watching with anticipation… guess what? free market, baby, and it’s going to burn!

May 21, 2007 at 11:11 AM #54096cashflowParticipantDon’t know how this is related to housing, but since it’s such a heated topic these days, I will comment.
…What to do with illegal immigration is so complex. My husband and family came to this country totally legally, but since they have extended family down there sympathize with the situation and hear about it first hand.
What all of us very ungrateful americans don’t realize is what the majority of the world, i.e. 3rd world countries have to live in. Most people would not risk life and limb to leave their country if they had any hope for a future.
Our question is if our gov’t wants to spend billions on a war in Iraq to ‘fix’ the problem over there? What about addressing issues with our neighbors to the south which directly affects us? I just think that the issue of illegal immigration needs to be looked at from a much bigger picture. We are not for illegal immigration as his family has tried to help extended family go through the process legally (wait in line for 20+ years), but really the solution is to open our eyes to the extreme poverty and oppression, want to do something about it, and push our government to facilitate real government change down there.

May 21, 2007 at 11:32 AM #54104lnilesParticipantKill 3 birds with one stone: make fatter Americans pick the strawberries. They lose weight with all that labor, which in turn reduces the cost of medical care (another hot topic in itself). Of course, we also get our strawberries. We can even market this as a new diet plan, so fat people can pay us to let them work in our fields! Then once the illegals see that the fatties have taken over, they’ll stop coming (because they won’t have jobs). Thus:
1. Health care is improved
2. Strawberries are picked
3. Illegals are reduced -
