    Hi all,
    Need some input regarding how much a landlord can legally charge for a missing key?
    I just moved out recently n happen to only return one key to the homeowner. I misplaced the key n had no time to duplicate another one at home depot for two dollars. I got a final bill after moveout n is being charged $200 for a single key. Homeowner said they had to change all the locks n I m being stuck with a whooping $200 I didnt expect. I was expecting an $10 charge since a new tenant is taking over, the place has to be rekeyed anyhow.

    Can I take this matter to small claims?

    Please advise, times are tough and I feel
    I m being bullied

    Read your rental agreement and see if this was mentioned. The landlord is entitled to change the looks if you don’t return the key for obvious reasons.

    I read over my lease agreement 10 times and it doesn’t say anywhere on there about lost keys and how much it would cost for replacement.

    If i were to take this matter to small claims, the judge should agree with me that it does cost $2 at HOme Depot and the most anyone should be able to charge is $20 for their lost time to go make the key.

    They need to rekey anyways for the new tenant, so why do i get stuck with the bill for something they had to do after i moved out.

    I could have easily only returned 2 and had 2 more duplicates. if they don’t change the locks, i would have access to my old unit, which is freakin scary for the new tenant or any tenant…

    no one wants to know that their cheap landlord didn’t rekey the place when the old tenant moved out
