GuestSounds good to me (and my mother came from Mexico in the 50s and worked as a migrant farm worker).
We need time to assimilate all the immigrants that we already have, and we should absolutely deport the criminals amongst them.
My sense is with the big housing slow down, we’re going to have a big, big recession, and a backlash against illegal immigrants (especially those on welfare, crowding our schools, crowding our hospitals, etc.). My sense is that work will dry up for many and that they will return to Mexico, Guatemala, etc. (as long as we don’t do stupid things like liberalize our welfare policies).
A fence will be in Mexico’s interest, long-term: right now, the U.S. serves as a safety outlet for corrupt Mexican society. With a fence, Mexicans will have to stay and change their society. Mexico needs a big ugly revolution (military takeover sounds about right) to break the iron grip between corrupt government officials and corrupt businessmen.

ParticipantBuchanan is a religious theocrat. I would hate to live a country where the Church is ruling everything.
However, I do support Buchanan’s position on Iraq — he’s against it.
What’s wrong with a North American Union? That’ll give me more opportunity to practice my Spanish. 🙂
