Finding meaning in your life is very important IMO.
Else you could be a very rich miserable SOB.
Family, hobbies ect.. can be meaningful but in general the idea is life is not for being happy, but for finding meaning and that may not be saving the world etc.. or even doing what others could not do in your place.
Anyway IMO.
May 26, 2017 at 11:27 AM #806708moneymakerParticipantDo be legal (or at least don’t get caught), perhaps equally important to being ethical is just use common sense. My crystal ball says to short MCD, has anyone been there lately, their prices are outrageous and foot traffic has definitely plummeted all the while they are remodeling store after store.
May 26, 2017 at 12:09 PM #806709gzzParticipantMCD prices are outrageous? Where do you go out to eat then?
The only fast food significantly cheaper than MCD are those gross $5 hot n ready pizzas.

If burgers is your thing then you should try In&Out or Habit Burger. I find there prices quite reasonable.
May 26, 2017 at 12:23 PM #806711moneymakerParticipantHave not tried Habit Burger yet, will give them a try. “5 Guys” in San Diego is owned by Phil Mickelson from what I hear. I’m currently defrosting 3, 1/3 pound burger patties I got from Costco, which taste way better than any MCD burger. If I go to MCD it’s for their $1 drink or to use the bathroom, that’s it for me after eating there a few months ago, spending $10 and still be hungry afterwards. Costco is a cheap place to eat but admittedly I do tire of their limited menu, might try a pupusa tomorrow, never had Salvadorian food before.
May 26, 2017 at 12:37 PM #806712ltsdddParticipantHighly recommend El Salvadoreño on Imperial Ave if you want to try pupusas and El Salvadorian food in general. Go for the sampler platter if you’re not sure what you want to order.
MCD…is being saved by their overseas expansions

Well, I guess if I were to work for a defense contractor, I could say… the purpose of my life is to be a good engineer so that my company can build the most advanced ways of killing other people quickly and most efficiently, so of which doesn’t even require a human body from our side to execute this…
I’d think I’d rather say, no I work on things that people really don’t need to buy, but they do anyway because it’s a 1st world thing to do…And whatever money I get paid to do help make those useless things, I spend part of it on equally useless things made by some other company, so that on the weekends, I can have a good time….

My life is feeling unusually meaningful right now. The oldest just finished SDSU engineering, in 4 years as planned (anybody know of any employment leads for a young mechanical engineer?).
He is so clearheaded, optimistic, joyful, he makes me feel really good about life, even though, basically, my life is kind of winding down, in a sense. Not imminently, but I do feel like the flight has begun its descent. I think im still permitted to walk around the cabin, for a while at least.
But not him. He’s just booking an incredible trip, ready to go!
So lately it seems to me that meaning is found in helping other people, your kids, or others you can connect with. Now I would not have agreed with this sappy sentiment when I was younger, in fact, it would have sounded kind of stupid to me.
Others? Feh. Why would I want to “help” others if I could spend money or time on my self. Well, it turns out I was wrong. My self is kind of dull and annoying.
I went to buy him a new car last night and frankly, it was way more fun than buying anything for myself. In fact, there’s pretty much nothing else for me to buy for me that will make me really happy. I have everything. A new expensive car for me would probably just depress me, thinking about insurance, etc. I’d much rather have an old cheap car for me and a new cheap car for him!
So yeah, it sounds dumb. But meaning is probably found when you connect and look outside yourself.
May 26, 2017 at 5:38 PM #806716HobieParticipantCongrats Scaredy. Really. Proud father. Seems like yesterday when your offspring started college!!
May 26, 2017 at 6:26 PM #806717flyerParticipantCongrats to your son, scaredy. Hope all goes well for him.
Agree that seeing/helping your kids, family, friends achieve their goals is one of the greatest feelings in life, and not just because of the material rewards they will reap, but because they achieved the goal(s) they went after, and didn’t settle for something less than what they really wanted.
As far as the overall meaning of life, or lack therof, that’s clearly different for all of us, and I’ve found that discovering/coming to terms with whatever that means to you is what really matters.
May 26, 2017 at 9:27 PM #806718FlyerInHiGuestCongrats scaredy. Who is giving the commencement address at the graduation? You’d do a great job giving an inspiring speech
May 26, 2017 at 11:07 PM #806720scaredyclassicParticipantwe went to the separate engineering dept ceremony, and the speakers were dry. i was not asked to speak, but i appreciate the vote of confidence.
he may be the most engaged, interested, and excited person i have ever met. its strange but he seems to me now exactly the same as when he was 2. born intensely interested in studying the details of the world.
im proud but acknowledge he is not my doing. he was a great human and all i did was i didnt screw him up . not sure that merits, great pride. i did provide consistency and infrastructure, which i guess im proud of.
i guess i just feel content.
.
May 27, 2017 at 5:01 AM #806722CoronitaParticipantWell that’s great Scardey. Congrats to your son and you! It’s great when your kids turn out good!!
Like I said, beyond friends, family, hobbies, life couldn’t be anymore simple!
Great that your efforts and hard work paid off! Most other things aren’t very important, so no point in getting all bent out of shape over it…There’s no need for envy/jealousy, because in the end we all end up in the same place …dead…
And that’s the thing..Meaningless doesn’t mean it’s depressing. How can it be? It means you are held down to be compelled to do something you really don’t want to do, that really doesn’t benefit you, your family, your friends, of if you just want to waste time….
Other meaningless things: constantly comparing the toys others have that you don’t have…meaningless. Constantly reminding other people the toys you have that they don’t….epitome of meaningless….well I guess for some that’s needed because they are surrounded by even more wealthy people that somehow make themselves feel inadequate and feel a constant need to reaffirm their otherwise meaningless life by comparing their own toys to others with less that don’t really give a shet….waiting for that big crash…meaningless….making your friends sit through hours of pictures/videos of their vacation when you drop by…meaningless…Bitching about pension crisis….meaningless. Bitching about Trump…meaningless. Posting on this blog…lately very meaningless….and with that…my post and this thread? The epitome of meaningless..
We’re all part of a meaningless thread here…lol….But again, dont feel compelled to continue in this meaninglessness…there’s an ignore but below if you so choose!
May 27, 2017 at 5:25 AM #806723moneymakerParticipantFor those seeking meaning in their lives the Dalai Lama will be speaking at UCSD Friday June 16 9 a.m. at RIMAC Field, tickets are required. I’ve never seen him in person so I will be going with an open mind.
