It will be torn down for high end high density housing owned by the likes of kilroy and owner occupied housing. The land is too valuable to remain as is.
What impact that does to housing there. Don’t know.
It would also impact Porsche CCA, BMW CCA, NASA CCA, since they would all need to find new places. Perhaps an airport base or Miramar? Can’t run them at the DelMarFairgrounds unless the event wants to pay the neighbors for relocation room and board during the event days as normally is the case…
May 23, 2015 at 11:53 PM #786607spdrunParticipantPlenty of stadia exist on valuable land. Besides, there are environmental issues due to the tank farm near the stadium leaking underground (which may or may not have been remediated). As long as Qualcomm Stadium isn’t touched, they can be largely ignored.
I’m sure Citi Field in NYC plus the tennis stadium stand on more expensive land, notwithstanding proximity to LGA airport.
Let’s hope the Chargers go fuck off to Hell Ay, and any plans to redevelop Qualcomm are stalled for a while.
May 24, 2015 at 12:47 AM #786608anParticipantAs long as they’re tearing down the current QCOM stadium and rebuild something, that all I want. If it’s a new stadium that the task force proposed, that sounds great. Else, if they leave, I hope they tear it down and build a high density mixed use development to tie into with the Civita development, I’d be all for that too. Especially if they keep the river park they have planned with the stadium.
May 24, 2015 at 7:17 AM #786613spdrunParticipantWhy do you give a shit what happens to the stadium? It’s a decent stadium for soccer and university games with a parking lot for events. Why not keep it, whether professional football plays there or not?

Because I don’t watch soccer or university sports. So I don’t want my tax dollar going to maintaining that POS. However, I would use the river park they build or the retail that they build.May 24, 2015 at 4:36 PM #786622mike92104ParticipantIf we’re going to spend money, it should be on the convention center expansion. That ACTUALLY brings in money to SD.
May 24, 2015 at 10:13 PM #786627spdrunParticipant^^^
Agreed.
May 27, 2015 at 9:17 AM #786674DoofratParticipantBut, but, the stadium will draw so many more people, we’ll need more hot dog vendors and stadium sweepers. That’ll bring in at least $150 billion dollars or something. And my tattoos, I got Bolts on both arms, what am I going to do about that?!?
May 27, 2015 at 3:31 PM #786702enron_by_the_seaParticipantThe powers that run the city have already made a deal in the smoke filled room. There will be chargers stadium built (whether it makes sense or not.). There will not be any public vote.
The only thing remaining is to now make a show of tough negotiations with chargers and sell the deal down the throat of San Diegans.
Get on with the plan …
May 27, 2015 at 3:43 PM #786709DoofratParticipantThey are of course staying. At least I’ll get my $10 from my co-worker I made a bet with about this, that’ll make a tiny dent in the cost to me to build a new stadium.
October 24, 2015 at 11:40 AM #790652paramountParticipantLooks like the Chargers are making it official: they are leaving San Diego.
Chargers to File Relocation Paperwork Ahead of Potential Los Angeles Move
October 24, 2015 at 11:47 AM #790654spdrunParticipantGood riddance. It’s a shame San Diego is playing along with their extortion, though.

+1. Don’t care much for the Chargers’ owners. Their plan all along was to squeeze that piece of valuable land from the city…..as for putting in more high-density housing, man, that stretch along Friars is very, very congested as it is.
October 24, 2015 at 12:45 PM #790656spdrunParticipantI wonder, with proximity to Mexico, if there would be a market for another team that plays REAL football.
