[quote=CA renter]AN,
This is what we subject our daughters to when we focus on appearance rather than health. I don’t like the word “fat” because it’s understood to refer to one’s appearance, not one’s level of fitness. If we’re concerned about health trends, we should use the terms “fit” or “unfit” instead.
Of course you bring up the extreme examples. Trust me, AN can produce some real extremes on the other end in a heart beat.
The medical community has drawn the line on obesity at BMI of 30 for Caucasians, BMI of 33 for blacks, and BMI of 27 for Asians. If you are above these numbers, statistically speaking you will eventually lose the war against metabolic syndrome, period. Appearance or otherwise.

Brian or Brutus, Was this you?

Brian or Brutus would not apologize, so no, it isn’t him. 😉
as for fat, I agree, don’t use that term.
stick to overweight or obese. but ppl, if you are obese, please don’t say you are just overweight.

October 8, 2012 at 10:58 AM #752314NotCrankyParticipantIn any case Hitlers BMI was probably fairly high.
I think for the most part if you are fat it’s your fault and how much it matters is your choice(yes I already know some here don’t agree with either or both statements).
That said, we are not as fat as Kaiser says.
My BMI is 25. 6’5″ 215. I am naturally lean. I’d need to lose 25-30 pounds or more, to get an “A” with Kaiser. At least half of that would be muscle, and I am a naturally skinny person not ectomorph but somewhere under mesomorp. So yes, BMI is stupid. I am 50 and my resting heart rate is just a few beats over that. I think a lot of us are both better nourished, muscle, and over nourished, fat, at the same time.Obviously someone with a naturally heavier build than me can be in better shape and look fatter and have higher BMI. But if you can go around pinching inches and finding lots of cottage cheese…you are not fit….and as OCR has said(I think) you get a metabolic fail to at least some degree, or are on your way to it, at your own hands. That’s where I agree with Brutus. It’s a lot like smoking or excessive drinking. It doesn’t matter that a lot of other people are smoking,barfing or blowing out their knees running to stay thin.
When people bring up what other people are doing the denial buzzer goes off. -
