Edit: I also want to add on the teacher topic. After reading about what happened in Carlsbad today and hearing about how common it’s becoming to have shootings at schools, I also would add teaching as a risky profession. I would still do it if I were allowed to have a gun w/me for protection. But then still getting back to what I consider minion wages for teaching a bunch of brats. Their wages do not pencil out in San Diego relative to COL.

1. Firefighters have a tough job.
2. Firefighters risk their lives.
3. Other people get paid more than firefighters.
4. Firefighters look sexy in uniforms.
5. Firefighters, like my friend bob, are very nice people.
6. If you dont like firefighters then you should be banned from calling 911 when your house is on fire and you should try to put it out yourself. Ha-ha!
tb
I like No. 6 the most.
Anyone that thinks it’s easy money should just march down and apply to be a fireman.
I wonder, was the sarcasm in my post too subtle or did you simply choose to ignore it, jpinpb?
I should add another:
7. No-one should be allowed to argue against anything unless they have first hand experience on the matter. Take that, all you rapist-haters out there!tb
She might have missed the sarcasm because what you wrote actually makes sense. I’d be happy to have a system where people can opt out, but if they do, then they should not have access to 911 or any other pubic safety benefits. This includes when you’re in a car accident or if there’s a disaster of some sort…you’re all on your own, have at it!
As to #7, yeah, people with experience generally know more about it. That’s just a fact. It’s frustrating to hear a group off folks with zero experience or knowledge pull stories and generalizations from their asses, and then spread them around on the internet as if it’s the truth.

I have not applied for the job. I have done several ride-alongs and decided whatever those guys get paid, it’s not enough and they can keep that job. It is hard work, long hours, stressful, not to mention risky. I wouldn’t do it and there’s not enough money they can pay me to do it. Clearly, they’re not paying enough to entice you to do it either, so I appreciate your honesty there, and I would venture others here wouldn’t do it.I have even less interest in becoming a fireman/paramedic. However many hours they are not fighting a fire pales in comparison to when they are actually doing it. I wouldn’t want to fight a fire even for 10 minutes.
I have often thought of teaching, but I don’t know if I have the patience to do it. There also, I don’t know how a teacher could afford a house in a decent part of San Diego on their salary.
I cannot believe this argument comes from an educated mind.
I have seen what sewer plumbers have to deal with, but I neither want to be one, nor pay them 6 figures with fully funded pension and lifetime healthcare. Is this a paradox? no.tb
