Not sure about the conservatives, but I’m guessing it has nothing to do with mixed races being “bad.”
This is just a guess, but perhaps white people are sick of the black community trying to co-opt him as being their exclusive representative when, in reality, he’s just as white as he is black — he “belongs” to both groups. IMHO, it’s anti-reverse-racism. π

I’m an independent and I like to point out he is half and half – and I don’t think that’s a bad thing. I like people no matter what their background – heck, I have several ethnicities in me as well in ancestors of the last 200 years.
I’m pretty sick of everyone calling him black just because he is half-black….why can’t he be called white just as easily?
It seems pretty racist to me to call him black if he has a drop of non-white in him.

Back then, there were plenty of rapes and interracial relationships on the plantation.
If you look at Brazil, you’ll see a population where Europeans interbred with Blacks and Indians. The same happened to a much small extent in USA.
The one-drop rule was applied by whites to keep Blacks from gaining white privileges and social standing.

I happen to think that people of mixed races are beautiful. Whites are prone to ugly wrinkles and blotches, but Blacks and Mixed have nice smooth skin.
