Yeah, it was pretty generous,,but I can do mid 20’s in a hour on the regular stationary training bike (lifecycle) with no class to help (though I usually do a half hour). Then I go lift girly weights and chat it up.
I have ridden on the road but won’t do it since my kids came along.
Seriously, are you that afraid? I used to go biking with my parents and sister along the coast road that goes through all the beach towns in central NJ. (Pretty similar to the stretch of 101 that goes from O’side to La Jolla, a bit narrower in places.)
Quite a bit of fun for a 8 year old, though I remember being terrified that they’d open the drawbridge while we were riding across it!

took kids a few years back from portland oregon up tow ashington on rental bikes. there was kind of a path. fun.
September 7, 2013 at 8:24 PM #765248scaredyclassicParticipantcoasting not necessarily bad. intervals. high effort. recovery. go rest go harder . rest.
September 7, 2013 at 8:27 PM #765249scaredyclassicParticipantwouldn’t it be irritating if some knucklehead was chatting on their phone next to you in spin class and pedalling the bare minimum? wouldnt it kind of violate the entire spirit of spin?
OK. we’re coming up to n incline and youre coming up hard ona pack of 5 riders…., let’s get out of our seats and try to move up alongside this pack of riders.
“SO I sez to nancy, i sez, that dress is gawjus, but it’s just not gonna work for that mermelstein’s affair…the color is wrong….”
“and now you’re powering up the hill and your right on the tail of…
“No! She did not! She did? She did NOT!. She did! GAwd…can you believe it? I can’t beleive it…”
The entire class would come and push over that nimrod’s exerbike.
September 7, 2013 at 8:31 PM #765250NotCrankyParticipantYes I am that afraid to rid a bike far a wide on san diego streets and rural roads.
Though it seems more like being responsible and using common sense when children are dependent on me.September 7, 2013 at 8:32 PM #765251scaredyclassicParticipant
Yes I am that afraid to rid a bike far a wide on san diego streets and rural roads.

September 7, 2013 at 8:36 PM #765252scaredyclassicParticipantone thing i hate about bikes now is the illusion of speediness they give us. even if we are out of shape, we feel so swift. that is part of their beauty. everyone feels liek they could almost be the fastest cyclist int he world. but theya re like drugs, delusion inducing, a dream of flight.
weights on the other hand are sober, horrible reality. sisyphus. the sheer horrible effort of rearranging the earth for survival. there is nothing delusional about a giant stone, a steel bar, a bar you grab and pull yourself up.
September 7, 2013 at 8:40 PM #765253NotCrankyParticipantI live in the hills and can ride 20 miles or more in dirt on “out and backs” from home, maybe way more . I just run though. I had a soft-tail mountain bike and never liked it . My kids have a BMX track.
September 7, 2013 at 8:41 PM #765255scaredyclassicParticipantrunning is not delusional. treadmills are.
bikes are like marijuana and spin bikes are like peyote.
weights are like water.
September 7, 2013 at 8:49 PM #765256NotCrankyParticipantWeights are nice, but that “trying too hard” look does go everywhere you go. We really should be looking at what is best for our 80’s. I know too much running isn’t it, heavy weights probably aren’t. Long live sport, or vanity, or testosterone, or freedom or whatever makes you tick though.
September 8, 2013 at 6:26 AM #765260scaredyclassicParticipantis life all about longevity? maybe it’s liek saving money for a time that will never come.
maybe the time is now.
the body must move this much is clear.
September 8, 2013 at 6:28 AM #765261scaredyclassicParticipantI’m going to get into therapy, discuss this anger…
September 8, 2013 at 7:10 AM #765262meadandaleParticipant

Spin class … bleeeeeech. I’d rather do the real thing, meaning an actually bike on roads or trails.
Sure on the road where you can coast. No coasting on these spin bikes.
I agree that it is boring….and not at all necessary….I have taken the one hour class exactly once. I went 30 miles.
No way you did 30 miles in an hour…
You can coast, you just let the flywheel pull your legs around.
As a roadie who logs about 200 miles/week and has done spin classes I can tell you that the classes are hard but they are not like riding a real bike and the class does little to get you in shape for real riding. But they are a nice diversion in the winter when the weather is bad and the days are short and it is hard to get out on a real bike.
